The tilma ( cape worn by Aztec Indians at the time) of Juan Diego which contains the image of the Blessed Virgin Mary is enshrined in the Basilica. The symbolism was directed to Juan Diego and the Aztecs in 1531. Seven million people visit the every year. A visit is a must for Roman Catholic and other Christian denominations.

I was prepared not to like the new, modern Basilica, but I was very impressed with the innovativeness of the architecture, and the nifty way they allow thousands to view the "original" image of the virgin from the underground passageway without disturbing whatever is going on in the sanctuary.
