Took my son at Easter as he'd been doing some Roman history at school and I remembered visting myself in my primary school years some 30+ years ago Easy to find, free to access and they had an exhibition of artwork on at the time we went. Some of the exhibits are a bit dated but on the whole it... More

After nearly 10 years in the area finally decided to pay it a visit! So. Nice looking place, reasonable size for a small city. The first room on the right was most interesting, to me anyway. It has old books etc encased in glass with low lighting for preservation with som translations. The books are good as its nice to... More

I recently visited the Grosvenor Museum looking for a certain painting by a man named Souch, which I was reviewing in an essay for my degree course, the staff at the museum were very helpful and gave me the direct telephone number of their art expert. I duly telephoned this man and found him extremely the opposite to all the... More

Great Museum with loads of information and excellent displays. I learned a lot about Chester from this visit.

The Roman rooms were the best by far. These two rooms and a sit through the excellent twelve minute video covering the history of Chester (other than the bizarre last 60 seconds where we visit Chester 300 years in the future) are well worth doing before walking round the city. Overall an excellent free museum - though I would agree... More

We have just returned from a wonderful May bank holiday weekend break in Chester and decided to visit the Grosvenor Museum, to be honest it was not our cup of tea, just thought they could have done so much with the place. For a free museum it was so hit and miss. Hits - The period rooms taking you through... More

Loved the parts about the Roman stones and the history parts were very interesting but the Natural history part felt a bit dated. However, for a free museum it's very good.

The big plus points is the roman masonary. Its a museum of rooms and there is nothing to join them up. Nothing to tell you about how Chester developed thro the ages, just rooms of stuffed birds and animals, church plate silver, various paintings etc

Unfortunately the little museum is very popular with schools, so plan your room visits around the kids. Lovely paintings and sculptures. There's also an extensive collection of silver.
