Visitors learn about the Founding Fathers, the pioneers West, Native Americans and the Slavery issue which lead to the Civil War in the new interactive American Heritage Exhibition. This precedes a series of attractive period rooms dating from colonial times until the eve of the Civil War. These rooms set the scene on domestic life throughout the exciting settlement and independence years of America and are accessible via a lift for those who have difficultly with the manor house stairs. The museum has an outstanding quilt collection which allows us to alter the permanent textile display from time to time (40-50 quilts are on show each year) and an inspiring Folk Art gallery intrigues visitors with whirligigs, cigar store Indians, weathervanes and even a Mohawk ship figurehead! « less

This is not the Natural History museum or the Smithsonian. Set in an old Bath stone house completely surrounded by greenery, it's a smaller museum and period house with a cafe at the back that overlooks the valleys and cotswoldy countryside that Bath is famous for. I was pleasantly surprised at the larger portion of baked-spud I recieved, and the... More

Excellent museum, full of interest, we spent nearly four hours there (including lunch which was excellent). Helpful guides in every room. Current exhibition of Gangsters and Gunslingers is worth the trip alone.

An excellent museum, giving a fascinating insight into the short history of America. On show are wide range of subject matter from the first settlers and the way lived to Indian chief headdresses. There is also lovely walks in the well kept gardens. The gift shop is a delight.

This was our first trip to the American Museum and we were impressed. The exhibits are well thought out and offer a good range of 'American Life'. The special exhibition which lasts till November is Gunfighters and Gangsters and had an impressive range of exhibits. We visited with a relative who was in a wheelchair and both the buildings and... This museum is full of fascinating detail about the way of life of settler families in America, right from the earliest times to the 20th century. The collection of quilts is unparalleled, and famous, but there is so much more to enjoy besides - not to mention a stunning setting, beautiful gardens and wonderful views.

A very interesting museum set in splendid grounds. Also look out for their special event days such as " Cowboys and Indians" - the grand children love them. Some extremely interesting exhibits and feeling closer ties to the USA than Europe I am really pleased to have somewhere that celebrates athe USA with our wonderful city of Bath

I am reviewing the cafe, as I am on the restaurants page. The food here is lovely, freshly prepared and quite delicious. The tea and coffee is excellent, and the cookies are so good I had to bring several home with me!

It's been a while since I last visited the American Museum. It has improved greatly. The history of the States is well presented, not overly long and informative. I particularly welcomed the 'human' guides who were on hand to provide additional information but only if you required it. They have an additional seasonal exhibition, this year being Gangsters and Gunslingers,... More

Had a good look around this place, it was thoughtfully presented and the guides were very friendly and more than happy to answer questions. A little gem tucked away. The grounds are also very pretty and would be lovely to sit in for a picnic in the sunshine. Easily a good couple of hours looking around. Interesting stuff!

Liked all the rooms in chronological order. Liked the fabrics. Did not like the way the Native Americans were given a very small area; probably because they were all massacred. What was said was true , but not enough info.
