Charlecote Park has lovely grounds, gardens, and an impressive looking house. Much of the house dates from the Victorian era but there are a few surviving elements of the original Elizabethan manor, like the gatehouse. Charlecote was the home of the Lucy family. Elizabeth 1 was a guest here and Shakespeare was reputedly caught poaching a deer in the park. The house has been renovated however the gate house, entrance, and great hall were original to the Elizabethan era. A beautiful National Trust property. Check the schedule carefully - we arrived 30 minutes before closing and were told we were too late to tour the house (which is meant to be wonderful). This is now owned and run by the national trust, so is only open between about Easter and October. It is a lovely old house on the banks of the river Avon and is reputedly where Shakespeare poached deer. It is surrounded by a deer park, and if you are lucky the fallow deer will not be hiding!
