Hohenschonhausen is a bit off the beaten track. We took Tram 6 from Oranienburgerstr to Genslerstr and then walked a few blocks to get to the old prison. There is an English-language tour at 2.30pm during the peak season and we were fortunate to have a guide who had a lot of personal insights into the regime, having been imprisoned... More

Excellent historic record of the horrors imposed on the opponents of Hitler by the SS. Gruesome history of what can happen when democracy is put aside.

Not a great deal one can say about this visually imposing memorial. Go and interact with it, take your time and whatever it means to you will be revealed. Next to Brandenburg Tor so easy to combine in a single visit. Next time we go we will avoid the school kids who were understandably excited to be on holiday and... More

While I am glad I visited this memorial and went on the tour, the day I went was rammed with groups and there was a bit of disorganisation as a result. For example, our guide had to stop talking a few times so other groups could walk through ours, or other groups had to stop their tours so we could... More

I didn't know anything of this prison but my friend had been recommended to visit. It wasn't difficult to get to but it isn't obvious and not perhaps on the usual tourist route in Berlin. Do your research first as if you ask directions en route you may be disappointed and several people we asked extra directions from couldn't help... More

You must get there by 230 For The English tour. There is only one a day. This is an incredible experience. You see the Soviet era prison cells and the Stasi cells. They used this prison until 1990. It was the apparatus of state terror. It is a must see. The cab fare is 20 Euros

I will never forget this site. We participated on a guided tour with a guide who had once been a prisoner of this prison. The guide took us back to the days after WWII, when to prison was build by the red army. In the basement we took part of the story of the victims of this terrible site -... More
