San Giovanni is ome of our favourite memories - its stunning and there is a beautiful peace there. Not crowded and people just seem to have respect for the history. Free to enter but worth paying to view the Laterno exhibition and cloisters - crazy, wonderful pillars surrounding this small oasis of peace in the city. Fantastically ornate ceilings, walls...

It's a little off the beaten path maybe, but this was our favorite church in Rome. The main hall of the church has incredible sculptures of the apostles and evangelists (old testament on the left, new testament on the right). The Catholic Church calls this "the mother of all churches" and they're right. Really awe-inspiring.
IF you want to see a beautiful church, you would have come and visit. You could take a metro to get there, but beware of pickpocket in the subway!

My first introduction of "monumental" statues of Rome and the inspiration they must have imparted to the believers as they made their pilgrimage to Rome.
Rome is filled with churches, and it's mind-boggling...just walk into any random one you pass and you'll find artistic miracles within. St.John Lateran is one of the largest and most important...and one of the most beautiful. Don't miss the baptistry in an adjacent building.
