I think because of the time of year, the gardens didn't have all that much colour. However, we enjoyed our visit to them. As it was cold and began to rain while we were there, it would have been nice to have had a comfy and warm cafe to provide us with hot drinks and food rather than the cramped... More

Very beautiful and cleverly planted gardens. Quite diverse with the traditional gardens at the top, the palm tree and succulent gardens at the bottom and then the extensive aviary. Only place I have ever seen an albino peacock (they have two) plus a giant tortoise!

Perched high on the hillsde overlooking Funchal, the gardens are spectacular. As you would expect from the location, it's a very steep place with lots of slopes and steps but gorgeous plants and trees everywhere. It's well worth the trip up to the gardens and the time you spend in there.

Not a good place for those who cannot walk easily it is very hilly and the paths are mostly cobbled. I really enjoyed the plants, both the "set pieces" and the less contrived areas. The views were spectacular.

A vast array of plants and trees plus a small zoo. Very well kept with plants ranging from Jacandra trees to bananas to huge (4+ metres) cactus. There is also a pond with fish and a couple of places to eat. At the top there is a cable car (not the one to Monte) but we did not take that.... More

The gardens below the Casino Park Hotel had more flowers than the Botanical Gardens so we were very disappointed with our visit.

unexpected, clean, well-maintained public gardens, free of charge. I was there the end of April, 2013, and there were flowers everywhere.

Madeira itself is one big botanic garden, and the trip via two cable car rides to get to this garden is quite spectacular - BUT the garden itself is very disappointing - here are a few reasons: it is badly maintained and quite scruffy; there appears to be not sufficient money to maintain the gardens or remove the old specimens;...
