Don't waste your time and money. It's one small room with some artifacts, wich takes about 10 minutes to look at. Very disappointed.

While this museum could be great, we visited at a time when there was very little to see. We went through it in less than an hour. The renovation project is probably necessary, but it was disappointing to see so little about the history of Crete.
The entrance was free. However what I saw was fantastic. About only two rooms open as they are carrying out major rebuilding. They show some of the mayor frescos (or pieces of) from Knossos and a lot of other artefacts. I would love to come back when they finished the restoration and prepared the exhibition with extensive information.
What we saw of the museum was fantastic. However, there are only about three rooms open as they are carrying out major refurbishments. I was told that the work was due to continue for most of this year. Please note also that the museum is always closed for cleaning until 1-00pm on Mondays.
This was a very small but nice musuem. They had a few high quality pieces that were presented In a format with the damaged / missing pieces being filled in. I recommend visiting the Knossos palace prior to coming to the musuem. If you do it in this order you'll have a closer connection to what your looking at.
We found the museum easily, close to a big roundabout and square in the city centre of Heraklion. Unfortunately some parts of it were closed to public, however what we did see was interesting. There were some great sculptures of Grekk gods, a beautiful sarcophagus and the original frescoes from Knossos. All in all,we were happy we went. The entry is...

The museum has been under renovation for ages I believe and the best exhibits are kept in another space. Unfortunately we didn't have time to see them because both parts closed so early... Pity. What we did see was very interesting and beautifully presented - and free!!
The main museum seems to have been closed for ages, but this year we were able to glimpse what the renovated museum will be like. The fresco gallery has now been re-opened and the visitor can see the famous Knossos frescoes displayed properly. The lighting is perfect and the non-reflective glass means that you can take good photos. Also the...

A very interesting museum with statues, pottery and fresco from the Minoan site. Enjoyed the visit. The exhibits were all well labelled.
Chaotic, as a lot is closed for renovation. including the lifts which makes it hard for people with disabilities. Once you get over this it is fantastic, ticket office is round the corner....
