A good way to see the island's eastern countryside, north of Douglas. On a clear day the view over Bulgham Bay is spectacular.
I have over my 60 years been up to Snaefell "manx for snow mountain" many times. I still get a thrill as we leave the station from the pretty village of Laxey. The Electric Tram rocks and rumbles along through the old Laxey Lead mines climbing steadily up the steep slopes of Snaefell. This Victorian tram way has taken thousands... More
Beautiful scenery, but pretty chilly and noisy. Certainly different and if you take the railway to the top of the mountain (Snaefell) you get to see the 5 kingdoms (Heaven, Wales, Scotland Nr Ireland and England). But be prepared to pay way over the odds for a cuppa (which you need to thaw out with). Tickets quite expensive too.
The rolling stock of the Manx Electric Railway is a trip into the past. Refurbishment has been carried out on one of the cars I have been in and it has been done to a very high standard. I have also travelled in a car that needs refurbishing. I say this as an umbrella is required inside when it rains!... More
The car that we travelled on was built in 1899. The trip to Ramsey from Douglas was a really great experience, and people that we spoke to on the trip said that although they were not particularly rail enthusiasts, they loved it - not to be missed !
We spent a few days in the Isle of Man in October - one of our best buys was a "Explorer Pass" it gave us a few days passage on bus/train/tram so we did not worry about car rentals etc. Using the pass we took the Electric Railway from Douglas to Ramsey - it is unchanged from when we rode... More
we loved the picturesque climb up - sadly when we got there it was a gale force wind and rain - but we still were so glad we did it! It was so peaceful gently going up with lovely views of the Laxey wheel on the way, a must!
Unique and special day riding a living piece of Victorian history. Weather is always dicey in this part of the world. Never mind. Rug up warm and enjoy. Manx Electric Railway was one of the best experiences of our hols. Our highest recommendations, especially as part of the 4 day 'pass' we purchased which allowed us access the steam trains... More
Despite the inclement weather a friend and I took the electric train from Douglas to Snaefell - we changed 'train' at Laxey and a member of staff offered a commentary on our journey upwards to the summit. Owing to the weather conditions, we could see very little - on a clear day no doubt the view would be spectacular. We... More
We found the whole idea of traveling by electric tram, horse drawn tram very interesting, so unlike what we have in Cincinnati, Ohio. We are just now getting the plans for our first six mile long electric street car, don't hold your breath, not sure when it will be finished. Our economic situation could be an issue.
