The former site of public executions (pre 19th century) has become the centre point of old Marrakech. At night there are thousands of people eating at the huge number of food stalls that have been erected. This is surrounded by streets of shops and the souk.
We found the whole experience most exhilarating. It is just a place to enjoy...

If sitting in overpriced cafes watching beggars and being bothered by hawkers is your thing whilst being wafted by the smell of horse urine then this is the place to visit, otherwise go to the Badii Palace or stay in the new city.
This enormous square is a combo food court and street theater. Wander past storytellers, fortune tellers, snake charmers, tooth pullers, tons of nearby souk shopping, horse-drawn carriages, bread stalls, exotic water carriers, orange juice stalls, etc. Visit day or night -- simply use common-sense precautions regarding crowds and street food.
You cannot go to Marrakesh without a visit to the main sqaure. By day snake charmers, horse and carts, orange juice stalls and balcony drinks overlooking the hustle and bustle and watch it transform in the evening with story tellers, music, food stalls. My words do not sum up how magical and magnifcient this square is.
I should think that the Arab spring is threatening here. Hence the lack of enforcement by the authorities. Avoid
This is a crazy place to be... It is buzzing. There are performers, henna artists, animals, food and people selling things...it can be a bit overwhelming but definitely worth visiting for the experience. The food, while it is cheap, is poor quality on the food stalls...so you get what you pay for. You will get harassed by the food stall...

The best place to sit and soak up everything that is bonkers about Marrakech - the noise, smells, people watching, snakes, monkeys etc all add to the brilliant atmosphere.
Absolutely fantastic attraction, the must see place to visit in Marrakech / Morocco.
Imagine a massive crowd of people leaving a football ground at 1650 on a Saturday afternoon. Now imagine yourself trying to go in the opposite direction against the flow of the people -but some of the people coming towards you are riding bikes, moped, motorbikes, pushing wheelbarrows...

The tour books say that this is the place to be. After 4 visits in as many days, I'm not convinced. Yes, it's big. Yes, it surrounds the souks - but then they are very interesting and vibrant. The square is a sad array of orange juice stands and stray groups with chained monkeys and cobras. Not impressed.
