There is not very much to do in colombo rather than shopping. but this temple is breath taking place. stunning and most relaxing place in colombo. it's truly worth to visit once you are in the city to get impression of buddhist culture. i have been once and can't wait to see again.

The only reason a non-Buddhist visitor to Sri Lanka would visit here would be because of the lack of cultural, touristy things to do in Colombo. Skip this if you are going to go on to Kandy, you can learn a lot more about Srilankan Buddhism over there.

It's quite an interesting set-up: a temple and museum filled to the brim with quaint Buddhist artifacts and nicknacks. Some might find the small temple elephant disturbing though. Also make sure to visit the lake-side temple.

I visited this city gem on Vesak, amongst many previous visits. The head priest knows a lot of Buddhism - take someone Sinhala speaking along when you visit to get the most out of it.

This is on of the most spectacular temples in Sri Lanka. it is jammed packed with the faithful prostrating themselves before the sacred tree and waving incense in every direction. For the Westerner this place is a true curiosity. HOWEVER, given that it is Buddhist temple one would expect as certain degree of reverence for animals such as the elephant... More

Whilst the statues of the buddhas etc are colourful this place is a relic with case after case of dusty offerings and a pathetic elephant chained on an asphalt surface. Go but you won't be impressed.

Located in heart of Colombo. Today is the Vesak Day in Sri Lanka. Very well decorated and lit. Lot of devotees visit for to worship. There is a lovely baby Elephant in the Temple. Temple has lot of ancient valuables.

Very famous among the Sri Lankans again and is well worshiped by the Buddhist community in Colombo. They have a famous yearly procession which is much viewed and appreciated by both local and foreign community in Sri Lanka. A great location for wedding photography or otherwise.

This is a temple in central Colombo. The day I was there the monks were making lanterns for the celebration of the Buddha's birthday and there was a wedding, the guests were happy to let me take pictures of them in their finery. The chambers and many statues and murals are delightful. I wouldn't say it is a tourist trap... More
