Masada is one of those places that take your breath away. It use to be Herod's winter palace, the place of massive suicide of 1000 Jewish (the history of Masada is very interesting). There are two entrances: if you chose one of them and decide to hike you have to have somebody to drive your car at the other side... more

Massada is a fantastic place to touch history, to see mountainous views and get to know the hedgehog which is still there from the times of the Romans. Hedgehog is not ordinary it’s brown in color and playfully runs around on the edge of the cliff as you enjoy beautiful scenery of the Dead Sea, Camps of Roman Legions, and... more

Mid-August and the air didn't change much from the daytime high (110F) in the evening. We stayed at the Masada youth hostel/guest house. Fabulous--the best deal in Israel. Climbing Masada before the sun came up was wonderful and felt like a private tour when we got to the top with only a few people around. Didn't want to wait until... more

I took the United/Egged tour that collects passengers from Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. It was late morning before we arrived at Masada, ( time wasted in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem collecting passengers from hotels) the guide "forbade" us from using the path to ascend the fortress ( time contraints and keeping the bus group together were cited as reasons) The... more

I’ve traveled a lot in my life, and this place is EASILY one of my favorite places on Earth. First off, it is quite an architectural feat. The mountain had it’s OWN PLUMBING SYSTEM! If you walk up the snake path, you’ll notice what appears to be a series of caves. These caves are “mouths” which collect rainwater into a... more

If you go, do yourself a favor and walk up. By walk, I mean near verticle climb, with steep, irregular steps. The cable car is for pansies. It's a good workout, the Israelis won't expect it from Westerners presented with a softer option and it's a cool thing to say you've done. more

The day we visited Masada was one of those incredible Spring mornings. We took the cable car to the top and our guide, who was like a walking history book of knowledge, taught us so much about the history of Masada, made us stop at various places and showed us incredible ruins, how water was stored (don't forget you are... more

Masada is a great combination of history, culture and scenic beauty that is well worth the 2 hour drive from Jerusalem. You can ride a cable car or walk to the top. Unless you are in excellent shape, I would not recommend walking up. I walked down from the top and found the terrain to be very rough and at... more
