Smaller but nicer and cleaner than Copacabana. Great colour of the ocean. Loads of beautiful girls. Great place for a lazy afternoon.

I loved Ipanema, there is so much to do there and it's one of the most buzzing beaches I have ever seen. On a Saturday or Sunday there is barely an inch of sand without an umbrella. We did not feel as safe as on Copacabana Beach, there was a strong police presence, but there were also a lot of locals that looked a bit suspicious.

We visited Ipanema beach on the last day of our brief visit to Rio. The beach itself has lovely, clean, golden sand and we enjoyed a couple of hours relaxing in the sun. The only reason why it has lost a star is that, unlike Copacabana, it doesn't have much in the way of refreshment booths or toilet facilities.

Wonderful to walk along this wonderful beach. A word of advice though...the sea can be pretty treachorous...it gets very deep right away and there are undercurrents. I would not reccomend to occasional swimmers to get in.

Rent a chair, get a pineapple caipirinha & enjoy the view (including the eye candies). I could not believe how clean the beach and the water was. I was 8 days in Rio and spent half of my time on the beach. Definitely worth the trip.
