I have seen a few step wells in the middle east but none compare to Abhaneri. It is grand by scale and beauty. The carvings and artistic execution of steps and landings are very special indeed. It is a wonder to behold. If anyone is ever in the Varanasi area, make this a 'must see' on your list.

Another place out of the touristic circuit, but that you must see, because is a very rare place. You can take a student guide outside the temple to know the story.

This is certainly worth the effort visiting. It is located in a small village beside an old temple. While a lot of work needs to be done to make it more tourist friendly, the character of the place is wonderful. Though the water is no longer useable, it gives an insight into the past.

Unique. You'll never ever see anything else like it. It is not that far off the Agra/Jaipur road. Go if you have the chance!

Step wells were sources of water and, sometimes centers of theater and other performing arts. If you go at some time other than high noon, the geometric shadows on the walls of the well will keep your camera busy for a good while. Well worth the stop! Look for the public water pump just up the road and hope you... More

Caution. You will need a taxi/rickshaw as none wait here for fares. Also, the monks here all want a tip/donation if you enter any of the many temples. Men and women bathe nude here, and ogling is not considered polite. The architecture is lovely, and the monkeys are cute.
