If you have plenty of time and sunny weather, this is the best way to be introduced to the keys. It's well worth the 3 hour drive from Miami Airport.
leave yourself extra time, there is sometimes traffic backup and always lots to see and stop at too!
This is a nice drive compared to most highway driving I have done. The water is quite lovely. The main issue with this drive is that it is slow, long and if you're stuck behind a slow driver there aren't many opportunities to pass. The drive from Key Largo to Key West must be driven at least once in your life. If you have the choice of driving or not, do it once. You will not be sorry. There are so many places to stop on the way and the scenery is die for!
I biked from Miami down to KW.It was fabulous. The Gulf of Mexico was to my right and the Atlantic Ocean was to my left for 150 miles. Stayed overnight in Key Largo and Marathon. Fairly heavy traffic, so plan on 2 1/2 hours to drive from mainland Florida to Key West. Several stretches have nice view of the water, but the small towns along the way have stores, outlets right up to the road's edge, making it feel like a strip mall.
