- LomahaSarasota, Florida278 contributionsGreat trail for riding off the street!I live near this trail and have ridden it on my bike in both directions. Well maintained. And I feel safe even when I am alone. Be aware that some folks use motorized cycles and are not very considerate. Be sure to watch for vehicles when crossing streets. Some drivers do not pay attention to the stop lights.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten November 7, 2023
- cfromnh567 contributionsLoved this trail. We rented ebikes and rode 30 miles of the trail. It is an awesome, well maintained trail. Mainly flat, with a couple of large bridges to cross highway. We did see a dolphin just below Venice.Visited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten February 3, 2024
- Peggy K1 contributionPedicab ride on the Legacy TrailA friend and I were treated to a wonderful pedicab ride this morning with Jim as the driver/guide. It was absolutely wonderful. Jim was very informative about the history of the trail and how it came to be, as well as other interesting history of the area. It was a wonderful way to spend the morning and I look forward to my next ride. I highly recommend taking advantage of this wonderful opportunity.Visited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten February 8, 2024

There is a big problem on the trail especially in season people come from cold climates to enjoy our wonderful Sarasota…so as a regular road bike rider until last month when I had a terrible accident I was cut off by a man on a electric bike now one of my bikes is electric…apparently one of the rental companies doesn’t make renters aware of speed limits or instruct them in bike safety…
They are dangerous no regard for my fellow cyclist
The other and more concerning is the3 wheel electric bikes high speeds ride with fellow 3 wheelers… for now I’m off the bike healing X-rays and scans showed no breaks maybe just my spirit but when you crack your helmet open your grateful for wearing it regardless of your ride long or short…I’m waiting for my new helmet to arrive I think I’ll be riding the road in the bike lanes…

We rode here and loved it. Starts in Sarasota and goes to Venice. Extensions in progress. Flat and paved. Road crossings had markings and traffic buttons. Markers on the trail are present every 1/10th mile. There are regular shelters with water and even tools. Amazing resource.

We had bikes delivered to where we were staying by Ride & Paddle on Siesta Key. Really nice Trek Verve hybrids with baskets, bells, and helmets. The trail is mostly flat and paved with nice views along the way.

Rented Trek bikes from Ride & Paddle in Siesta Key. They provided directions to the trail via safe route. Caught the trail near Clark Road and rode south. Stopped in Oscar Scherer State Park and walked the Green trail to see gopher tortoise, scrub jays, eagles nests, woodpeckers, and more. 12 mile stretch from Clark to Venice Train Depot goes by parks, over waterways, and flat almost the entire length. Crossed the bridge into downtown Venice and rode to the public beach. Stopped for ice cream and did some shopping in Venice. Then rode back to Siesta Key. Ride between Siesta and Venice was about 1-hr 45-min each way. Noticed bike repair stations and rest stations along the trail, as well as grass lots for people to park and access trail.

The safest place by far to ride your bike in Sarasota. Old railroad tracks converted to bike and walking trail. Never crowded when we've gone. Extended from Venice to downtown Sarasota. Sarasota's wisest investment in infrastructure that caters to locals and visitors alike.

There is no shade. It's ridiculously hot. I have not been since they opened the expanded portion. I would not want to cross any of the streets it goes through.

Does anyone know where I can park my bike overnight until the end of May 2020 e.g., near the Culverhouse Nature Park? I live about 7 miles from there, and the ride there is a bit long and dangerous. I would rather spend my time on the trail, as opposed to riding there and back on busy streets. Thank you.

Est-ce que la piste cyclable va de sarasota à Brendenton?

No, the path goes from Sarasota heading south to Venice. That is, the path connects Sarasota & Venice.
Can we rent bikes and helmets at the trail?

No. There is no place to rent bikes along the trail. You would have to go to a local bike shop.

Can I rent a tandem bike here or nearby?

You can contact Venice bikes and trikes at 941-412-3821. They have bicycle rentals and do free delivery and pickup. If they don’t rent tandem bikes, they may know who does in town. You can also check out The friends of the legacy trail website for more information too.

Does anyone know what happened to the elderly woman who was hit by the biker a couple years ago on the legacy trail? She was badly injured and in the hospital, and there has been no further word about her.

So you believe it is ten miles from train depot to the end? We rented bikes and rode it while we were there and we were guessing ten miles one way.
