We visited St Marks NWR on two occasions in the last month; late Mar and early Apr. The staff was very helpful and provided great info. The first pass through was on the way to SW Florida and was primarily a quick drive through. We had planned on spending two days in the area on the way south. However due...

If you like being out in nature, St. Marks is the place for you. There are a number of short trails through different types of ecosystems, and two longer trails, 6 and 12 miles each. We did the 6-mile trail on a sunny day and saw tons of wildlife (many alligators, close up; rattlesnake; wide variety of birds, deer, turtles,...

Nice places to sit and wander, great views and history to boot. Pay attention to the signs and don't wander into wilderness areas unless you know what you are doing. Best to leave the small doggies at home. Bring the sunscreen, the bug spray and your camera.
We live in Tallahassee and have gone to the Refuge numerous times. A few pointers: Don't just drive to the lighthouse and back, get out and walk, you will see so much more. Definitely go to the observation deck (near the bathrooms and pond), sit quietly and LOTS of different species will come around, especially to feed in the marsh...

We had been told over the phone when inquiring about the refuge that we would see all kinds of wild life. Perhaps deer and even black bear. Seeing just a...

Before entering the drive through the refuge taking you down to the lighthouse, be sure to stop at the visitor center for information and the gift shop (real nice T-shirts). Enjoy the scenic beauty on this drive and keep an eye out for birds, alligators even deer. You can pull off the road a little to enjoy any area. Once...

We drove through on a warm day after a large rain, so the ponds were a bit flooded. We saw over 12 Alligators sunning themselves on the banks. We also saw a snake slithering across the road. This is a nice, relaxing, scenic drive. Wheelchair accessible and fun for all ages. You pay $5 per car. There are areas to...

This is about 45 mins from the center of Tallahassee but worth the drive. I saw it normally costs $5 for car entry but when we went the visitor centers were closed so it ended up being free (though still would be worth the fee). We drove down to the lighthouse and walked the trail, took some great pics and...
