About
Modra spilja (The Blue Cave), located in a small cove of Balun on the island of Biševo. The cave itself is 24 meters long, 10–12 meters deep and up to 15 meters high, while the entrance to it measures 1.5 meters high and 2.5 meters wide.In the year 1884. baron Eugene von Ransonnet described and depicted it. On his suggestion the entrance to the cave has been enlarged, making it this way accessible to the entire world. The cave has two entrances: the smaller one artificially widened and deepened so that the boat could sail through, and the wider one, located at the southern part of the cave – the underwater passage, through which the magical game of the light and water is performed…Depending on the season, the ideal moment to visit the cave is between 9 and 13 o’clock in the morning.

We came here as part of a boat trip around Vis. The grotto is beautiful, blue colors are magnificent. Expensive tickets at 18 euros per adult in summer 2023 but we are glad we did it

This formed part of our day in Vis and we are pleased we took up the offer of visiting. The trip kicked off with a ‘fast’ speed boat trip over to the island of Besivo. On arrival there, we were moved to a much smaller boat to enable access in the cave. It was a short journey there but on entry to the cave, the WOW factor kicked in given the eerily blue light within and hence the name. Though inside for barely 10 minutes, the guide provided a good description of how it was found and formed which added to the trip as did the return speed boat trip.
The one slight negative, which some may need to consider, and that is the cost. However, if you can afford it, do it!

Having read that the Blue cave had to be seen if on Vis we went as part of an island tour by speed boat. Left Vis town at 8am to beat the crowds. You can only get by boat, you need to buy tickets, transfer to a small boat to get into the cave. Check the weather is good and liw tide. Be prepared to wait in line unless you get the speedy access. All changes changes as you enter through a tiny entrance into darkness then into a blue light area of the cave with crystal clear water. The sunlight enters from below fulling the cave with blue light. A must see place.

This is a must see. The cave itself is remarkable. Sadly because that is the case there is usually a giant wait. There is a small bay with a decent beach, a cafe, a bar and ice cream stand to kill the time. The cave is definitely worth the wait. What a colour!

We were very lucky that being early season there were few people visiting yet, so we had almost ten minutes inside the Cave and a very clear interesting explanation from our guide..... wonderful experience. (although I'm sure in the height of season with queues, it may not be such a pleasant experience, think carefully before making the journey).

The cave is very small but the colour inside it is absolutely beautiful. Totally deserves a visit! Keep in mind you have to wait to visit it.

Checking out this cave is a short but cool 5 minute experience. You'll wait in line a bit shorter if you go early in the morning. You go in, the guide tells you the caves history, you enjoy the beautiful blue light reflections and you go out. It isn't much but its definitely unique and worth it.

The way they are currently operating it is AWFUL- you get less than five minutes inside the cave. I timed it. 3:52 minutes- you can barely see and your photos are all blurred because you are so rushed. I know they want to make as much money off people as they can but it was a total and complete rip off. Last time I take a tour like this. Also- yes, the water is beautiful and amazing...just like tons of the rest of the beautiful Adriatic. This is a tourist trap (though does not need to be- if they spaced the boats, were less greedy, and could let you have at least 10 minutes there, it could be magical.
i also mistakenly went on a speed boat, while not dangerous in terms of drowning or anything, if you have a back/neck, concern, you will be in pain. I am upset because I asked questions before about how harsh the trip was physically and I should have asked more. So I am now in pain after spending money for 3.52 minutes in a blue cave. Whole experience was stressful and not worth it.

We were lucky to be the only boat. The guide told interesting stories. The cave is really small. You enter kneelong down in a boat which is cool. The natural blue colour of water is amazing. A great 7-minute experience if you are the only one. With waiting it could be disappointing.

If i could put a -10 rating, i would.
I never write reviews, if i do, they are positive, but this....
The people that await you at the bay are extremely painful to deal with, arrogant and screaming at you. We have been there 10 years ago and you paid 3x less, you entered with your own boat, and stayed as much as you wanted, and every tourist was happy. Now, they put 2 barking dogs, i.e. caveman to protect the cave from tourists with screaming and almost physical fighting with them on how they didnt know the rules, even though the rules arent written anywhere.
We didnt enter - so shouldnt you.

We will be in Split in late October. Will the tours be available still if we book when we arrive? There are tours i can prebook but they are very expensive. However i am worried if i wait when we get there that there wont be any choices. Does anyone have suggested companies?

Hi.
I don't know about the Split. We bought the tour directly from Vis. But tourism is the main activity there so I wouldn't be worried about it. Most probably that you will find the tour even cheaper than you can choose now. Only one recommendation from me : try to find the tour where the tickets for both boats will be included. Because you need one boat to reach the island and the second small one to go to the cave. Usually second one is excluded and you need to buy tickets it means queue, time, stress...

Bonjour,
Nous aimerions éviter de prendre une excursion à la journée... Avez vous des infos/des sites internet pour rallier Split à bisevo sans payer 100 euros l'excursion ?
Hello,
Do you have some good plans to go to bisevo from Split without Day tours ?

I was wondering if someone could tell me more information about the tours the government does to the blue cave. I’m just looking to do a quick (whatever that means during peak season) tour of the blue cave and or the green cave. Someone on a different site said that the Croatian govt runs small 20 dollar tours but I couldn’t find much info. Is this true or do I need to do an expensive full day trip? Thanks!
