Each weekly live concert features music of the Civil War; light classics of the venerable St. Cecelia Society; the music of George Gershwin, who wrote "Porgy & Bess" during a summer in Charleston; gospel spirituals sung by slaves as they passed through the port of Charleston; and "Amazing Grace", the words of which were inspired in the composer, John Newton, while he worshipped in our host venue, Circular Congregational Church. Location at the church was very good and appropriate although there was an echo, you get used to it. Artists were varied and skilled and reflected the different music genres of Charleston. I would recommend it to all music lovers. Go casual.

For a melodious historical trip through Charleston's history, you will want to stop off at the Congregational Circular Church on Meeting Street in Downtown Charleston SC. Starting with the Church's own St. Cecelia Society of the 1700's two classical favorites as performed by Clarinet and piano. The next treat was a sample of music sung by soldiers and citizens during the... Very dynamic leader introduced string, guitar and banjo and gospel singing with small stories about the origins of the music and the context where it arose. An hour and a half in the beautiful Circular Church on Meeting Street, the show was a great way to pick up some of the culture of the town of Charleston. You see flyers... More

My husband has worked for decades in public address and audio systems and is very knowledgeable about acoustics. He was very disappointed with the quality of sound at this church performance. The host was talented and very informative weaving the historical background of Charleston with the colonial, African-American spirituals, Civil War and jazz music of the city, but the sound... More

Thanks for your feedback. Circular Congregational Church is several hundred years old and does not offer concert hall acoustical effects. The host, Bill Schlitt, has a powerful voice that fills the church without a microphone. He is amplified while singing the Civil War set. We continue to strive to make the listening experience as wonderful as possible. More

This was a perfect way to end our week stay in Charleston. We did get tickets the minute we arrived (easy to do by phone) and glad we did, as it was close to sold out. Price is reasonable, venue in the round church perfect with good acoustics and not a bad seat in the house, history of Charleston was... More

Hands down, one of the best performances I've ever heard of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue! Great variety of colonial, slave spiritual, Civil War, and jazz music. The show's host weaves in a bit of Charleston history. The quality of the music is superb. The venue is historically significant and interesting, but it is a plain building. But one soon forgets... I am delighted to add another positive response to the many who have enjoyed "Sound of Charleston". It is nice to have an emcee who can relate some of Charleston's history to the music and do it in an interesting way. The church is a nice setting for a comfortable group giving everyone the opportunity to be close to the... More

This was a highlight of our stay in Charleston. We learned about the local history while we enjoyed a varied program of music all related to the history of the city. Performances ranged from classical to folk to gospel to jazz. The musicians were of high quality. This is not a watered down tourist trap but an engaging and polished... More

This is a great addition to the historic walks and tours of the city. The performance I attended in the Circular Congregational Church tonight was amazing....the narrator explained the significance of each piece performed -- how Jenny Lind was greeted by 40,000 people when she arrived in Charleston, or quoted Civil War soldiers' letters about singing at camp. But the... More
