I agree that they trying to turn this into a cash machine. You can tell the guides memorize their lines and could care less about the history of the place. In all other historical homes I visited across the US they had a deep love for history and great respect for the houses and their families. The staff acted like... more

My husband, twelve year old son and I managed to go on the last tour of the day. It was nice not having over eight people on the tour because we all had an opportunity to ask the very knowledgable tour guide pleanty of questions. He stayed with us for 1 1/2 hours telling how the home became a rental... more

After reading Widow of the South and finding ourselves in the area, we decided to visit Carnton and see the mansion and graveyard in person. It's a beautiful old place and the cemetary is hauntingly sad. But from the moment you arrive on site, it becomes quite apparent that Carnton has been turned into a cash machine. From the outdoor... more

The Carnton House is a tragic episode in the history of the Civil War. This is not the most majestic of the Old South's mansions, but it's story contains a testament to how people, even the rich, had to bear the brunt of a brutal war. I read the other reviews about how tour guides had ruined their tours. I... more

Florida visitor hit the nail on the head - too much goofing around about "eeww, there's blood on the floor" and "this is sooo creepy" - from the TOUR GUIDE yet. They don't seem to understand that the inside of the structure is as much a 'cemetery' as the outside. VERY disappointing. Go to Carter House down the street -... more

As a person that used to live in Nashville, it has been a true joy to share in the past of the battles that went on there. I was a mere teenager when I first visited the Carnton Plantation, and ever since then I have been hooked. Its thick history keeps my imagination racing with all the feelings that took... more

Carton Plantation is a fascinating place, with the house and several outbuildings,as well as a large cemetery . The house is still undergoing restoration. Tour guide was knowledgeable, but mostly about the house & furnishings (which are not all original to the house--most rooms had 2 or 3 original pieces but the rest were "of the period") Thought the tour... more

During our trip to Nashville, we learned about the Carnten Plantation which was our destination due to popularity from the novel Widow of the South. It was early so we drove around Franklin and happened upon Carter House. It was our first stop. Utterly amazing! The property is well preserved as it would have looked at the time of the... more

carnton is a must-see for anyone visiting the franklin, tn. area who has even the slightest interest in history. i have visited many plantation houses in the south and have even stayed in some that are bed and breakfasts. although they all have an interesting history, carnton is different because while touring, you can actually feel the sadness of what... more

During the Battle of Franklin in the Civil War, Carnton Plantation was used as a field hospital for the Confederates. Many soldiers died there, including 4 generals. In some rooms, you can still see the blood-stained floors where the men were operated on. In addition to the Civil War connection, Carnton is also interesting as a plantation house. The tour... more
