The greenways are a great addition to the Knoxville area infrastructure, even if some people are hesitant to try them in fear of the unknown. These trails are safe and well covered by fellow pedestrians, just might not be the best option after dusk. Third creek has plenty of trees and wider paths to bring you into nature with access to the other greenways which are easy to follow.

The Third Creek Greenway (5.3 miles) has expanded and continues to develop in the just west of downtown portion of the City of Knoxville. Combined with the Bearden Greenway (2.1 miles) and the Neyland Greenway (3.0 miles), it starts at Sutherland Avenue near the Sutherland Avenue Post Office and runs all the way to the Gov. Ned McWherter Park under the South Knoxville Bridge. The trail is paved and runs along Third Creek and the Tennessee River for a good portion of the journey. Different places to access the trail include, Elder's Ace Hardware (150 N. Forest Park Blvd), West High School (Tobler Ln near the Railroad), Sutherland Avenue at Cox Street (south side of Sutherland), Tyson Park (from either S. Concord Street or 2321 Kingston Pike), Volunteer Landing Park (Neyland Drive), or from Gov. Ned McWherter Riverside Landing (Riverside Drive). The trail is fairly level, even though it follows the creek and the river and has many areas of shaded travel in the heat of summer. I would recommend this for families, couples, or just individuals that like to enjoy the beauty of our city. The trail is available for either bicycling, walking, or strolling (would not recommend for cyclists looking for speed).

This connects to greenways that lead from Bearden Elementary, in West Knoxville, through the UT campus, along the TN River and finally to a riverfront park and beyond, with many attractions along the way. It's a terrific family or couples outing or regular place to exercise. It's safe and frequented by many people on a regular basis and there are bike rentals at several points along the way. Our family uses it regularly, often in conjunction with a visit to the University of Tennessee experimental gardens, with playground. It can be used to travel to UT from points east and west, eliminating parking difficulties on campus. It is patrolled by local police on bikes but use common sense in approaching any sketchy looking characters, who sometimes hang out around bridges. My family has used this greenway regularly for 30 years without incident.

I use this Greenway a couple of times per week as a walking trail, starting at the University near Cumberland. I divert over to the Fair Site before coming back to walk along the creek, under Neyland Drive, to Calhoun's, and beyond, all along the river. It is clean and I have never felt unsafe along these sections. What a great way to exercise and be out in nature at once! It is good for the mind and soul to walk among trees, the creek, and the river. A beautiful addition to Knoxville.

This path is really nice. It runs north off the river by the University of Tennessee Gardens. The trail winds around creeks and water thru parks and woods. You can loop around the Univ. of Tennessee Recreation Sports complex (very cool & big).
The Greenways in Knoxville are awesome for any runner or bicyclist. The are great for walking too. The Greenways are great for younger cyclists that may not be confident riding on the roads. Knoxville residents are lucky to have this system.

Access tot he Greenway is very easy. Greenway is kept quite clean of debris. Biking is made simpler as the paths are clean of grit.

I walk my dog along the greenway, and I see other people walking, jogging, running, biking... the older gentleman who carries a banana is someone I frequently see, in addition to herons, geese, fish, and turtles. It's a shame the southern section of the creek is so disgusting and stagnant, because the greenway itself is gorgeous. UT Gardens at the end is nice to walk around too. And don't miss the native mussel mural!

I bike to campus from Earthfare along the Third Creek Greenway. What a gem! Speedy and healthy way to get to campus!
