Individual tours of each garden run daily and include a ride from the Visitors Center in Poipu along a scenic coastal route and continue along the valley rim on a former sugarcane train railbed. Visitors disembark on the valley floor to explore these outstanding gardens. McBryde, NTBG’s flagship garden, is home to the world’s largest collection of native Hawaiian flora, many endangered or having gone extinct in the wild. It is a “botanical ark”, filled with palms, flowering trees, ornamental flowers, and unusual plants from the tropical world. Allerton is a former private estate, named by National Geographic Traveler magazine as one of the 50 places to see in a lifetime. Plants form the walls of outdoor rooms, the canopy of trees the ceiling. Housed within are elegant statuary and water features. A popular spot for photos is the ‘Jurassic trees’, with their massive curving roots.National Tropical Botanical Garden is a nonprofit institution, dedicated to saving and studying tropical plants. « less

We toured the McBryde Garden on a sunny morning. We opted for the self-guided garden and weren't disappointed. The drive into the garden offered great views of the ocean and Allerton Garden. The tram driver provided some great historical and botanical information along the drive. He identified many plants and locations and filled every in on the history. The garden... More

NTBG is a repository of tropical plants and trees. It is a living garden (actually two) at Po'ipo plus the NTBG facility accessable fom Lawai. The "green" building houses administrative staff and, more importantly, a magnificent library and collection of dried plant materials for study. A membership also brings a quarterly publication describing NTBG's local and worldwide studies, acquisitions, interests,... More

Mahalo Dr. Bob and staff. Everyone was helpful, informative, and enjoyable. Dr. Bob is one of the island dentists who volunteers his time and knowledge as a tour guide. We were lucky to get him. He shared with us some of the fruits on the trees, stories, folklore, etc. Matt was our bus driver and navigated some of the narrow... More

I was so excited to take this tour, but shortly after our tour guide showed up I thought, "OMW, Really?" He cracked jokes the entire time (they were not funny). I understand sometimes a little humor lightens the mood, but this guy had to say something ridiculous at every point. I finally just walked away and took pics and quit... More

I took this tour 5 years ago and enjoyed it immensely and so was excited to take my cousin this trip. The tour guide was too chatty with nonsensical comments/jokes (which were not funny). It was to the point you could not tell if the information being shared was true or not! The tour moved too slowly due to the... More

While garden-lovers will especially enjoy roaming this special place, anyone who believes in nurturing and saving exotic tropical plants for future generations, will be glad they spent a couple hours here. The Garden is actually 2 gardens: Allerton & McBryde (more acreage yet more park-like). I recommend the reservation-only, $35 guided tour of the Allerton Garden, which includes the minibus... More

We were unable to go on the Allerton gardens so went to the McBryde. They were beautiful gardens, but were basic, not many signs for plants. If you are a keen gardener it would interest you, if your just looking for something to do, maybe skip it and try the Allerton.

A stroll through this garden enhances the Kauai experience. The gardens a labor of love, and the place is a serene botanical retreat. It may get busy, but without a bus tour crowd it is a memorable spot.

I would highly recommend the 2 1/2-hour guided tour. Our tour guide, Ryan, who is originally from Kauai, was well-versed on the abundant flora and fauna and had lots of interesting stories to tell along the way, including how the gardens were created ad tidbits on movies that were filmed there. The gardens are a beautiful way to enjoy a... More

Guide was very good. Garden was absolutely gorgeous! We loved all the "rooms" and appreciated the effort and artistry of Robert Allerton. One of the highlights of our visit to Kauai!
