We had expected to discover a number of places selling locally made goods - but that was not the case. A couple of nice places, but it was obvious that several shops carried goods made in China.
I went in early May and was really disappointed. I am a craftsman myself and this was my first and last trip here. A lot of the same items are carried in multiple stores and the quality was not reflected in the too high price. I realize this is a touristy area but give me a break. I'll also say...

Amazed by the talents of the people of the Smoky Mountains. You must be willing to do the 8 mile drive with many stops and starts and taking your chances getting on and off the road but it is well worth it.
Have a day free be sure to do the Arts and Crafts Loop. Alewine Pottery is a must stop. My wife enjoys the quilt shop and I get an old fashion rootbeer float at the soda fountain while waiting. Take your time and enjoy.
If traveling to Gatlinburg, definitely set aside a day or two to see all the local craftsmen and artists. These are people with true talent, and they depend on visitors to make a living. I have been to several shops, and I even purchase unique things that I see. These people are truly amazing.
If you want to see REAL arts and craftsmanship, you must go through this community, you will find the most interesting and unique things, and get to see first hand at the talented crafters. A must do in Gatlinburg
Drive through the community and stop at your favorite craft store, or stop at all the nice shops. The people are friendly and will explain all of their crafts.
What can I say? Just interesting, realistic Appalachian artistry, I spent too much money and I'm not a shopper!!
We truly enjoy shopping from the local artists. As others have mentioned it is fantastic to meet the actual artists when you visit the shops. We have found some wonderful items to go into our home. Make sure to visit the Christmas Store on the trail, people are super friendly and the kids get a one on one with Santa.
