Thames Street is the heart of downtown and right next to the harbor. There's lots of cool shops and restaurants off here. Great for if you need to kill some time or like people-watching. (Best during daylight hours because the crazy college kids come out at night to paint the town red.)
Just be warned: the sidewalks are NOT wide...

This is the main drag that has all the popular restaurants and shops. All the other small streets are quaint and nice, but this is where everyone goes so in the summer months I can imagine it gets quite crowded here. I have only been on a April weekend and it was already crowded then.
Along the larger stores on the other streets, Thames Street has many great small stores with local color. Great way to spend a few hours.
Great place to spend an afternoon or 2. We came for lunch and/or dinner everyday we were in town. Great shopping and eateries. Bowmen's wharf was across from the middle of Thames street and you get a great view of the harbor. Photos galore and sea breezes are easy to find!
You will find some nice shops and many restaurants along Thames Street. It helped that our B&B was just yards of this blvd.
I always enjoy walking on Thames St for window shopping; some unusual shops, boutiques and souvenir shops all along the water. Lots of restaurants to check out, also. Be aware that parking is always a hassle, even out of season.
This streeet reminds me of provincetown Ma. If you get a chance drop into the Shore Soap Shop. It is a new shop and has a variety of hand made soaps to choose. from. It is pleasent to walk up and down looking at all the interesting shops.
Many little shops to explore. Go to the Shore Soap Co. http://shoresoapco.com/. They just opened and all the products smell amazing as well as being reasonably priced. We wish them luck!
so many lovely shops~ bargains can be had but there are lots of high end shops as well. Plenty of great restaurants and pubs...many overlooking the harbor. And it's almost all historic!!! Very enjoyable strolls.
