I've been in Matala twice now and always found the easy and enjoyable hike over the ridge to Red Beach both fun and entertaining. Red Beach is quite clean, with a fine sand - depending on the weather though, the wind might be some nuisance at time. Also make sure to carry water, food and sun protection with you because...

Once you get going the directional signs are somewhat of overkill. A rarity on Crete to say the least. It's a reasonably easy walk but was more difficult because the wind was abnormally strong this day. The waves were pounding the beach so we gave up on the idea of a swim
Beautiful and unspoilt. A really good half hour walk best done before the sun is too high. Be sure to take any food or drink you should want as there is no taverna or kiosk
It is a bit of a hike, only to find it full. Go early, expect nothing, and you will get back to Matala with an appetite
It's a lovely beach, with a bar that sales drinks. It’s a hard 30 minute walk from the path that leads from the hotels car park area (risky in flip flops) – it’s better to take the path that goes behind the restaurants and bars. There is also a boat that goes from the bar/restaurant that looks like a pirate...

A challenging half-hour hike over a pass from Matala. There is a makeshift bar and there are umbrellas and chaises longues for rent at the usual reasonable rates. Clothing optional away from the umbrellas at each end, the north end is perhaps more hetero but the south has more space. One can hike along the rocks to the south, but...

Beautiful wild beach. Just one "bar" and some umbrellas. Good place to forget about overflowed beaches and civilization, becouse small mountain save it from a lots of people . Best for nude.
Close to Matala, this beach is not exactly easy to access as it is a bit of a walk from where one can park. While it is private and nudism is allowed, there are no parasols and chaises, so bring your own shade!
Its a bit of a hike, but well worth it! Once you are there it is amazing, and you get your daily exercise getting there!
