Factory Theatre is a vibrant centre of new play development - a hub of theatrical activity, presenting cutting-edge Canadian theatre - committed to diversity in its portrayal of the Canadian experience in its broadest form - contemporary, edgy, embracing creative risk.Founded in 1970, Factory was first theatre to announce that it would develop, produce and present exclusively Canadian plays. For the first time, an industry dominated by British and American playwrights saw the emergence of groundbreaking original Canadian theatre. The company is known as “the home of the Canadian playwright”. In addition to its commitment to original Canadian theatre, Factory has led the way in promoting diversity in theatre, reflecting the Canadian experience from many perspectives. This bold commitment to exclusively Canadian theatre has translated into the production of more than 300 new Canadian plays, extensive awards and a committed audience base. Over the years, Factory has been led by such illustrious members of Canadian theatre as the founding artistic director Ken Gass,Bob White,Jackie Maxwell, and Michael SpringateFactory Theatre’s artistic directors have also occupied leadership roles in theatre across Canada – including the Shaw Festival, National Arts Centre, Banff Playwrights Colony, Alberta Theatre Projects, Playwrights Workshop of Montreal, the Charlottetown Festival, the National Theatre School, University of Toronto and more. Factory Theatre’s current Co-Artistic Directors are Nina Lee Aquino and Nigel Shawn Williams. Factory has launched the careers of some of the country’s leading playwrights and theatre artists – from George F. Walker to Anusree Roy.
