Auckland is the largest city in New Zealand with an urban area population of over 1,300,000 people. Almost one third of all New Zealand residents live in Auckland.
Auckland is actually comprised of four different smaller cities; Manukau, Waitakere, North Shore, and Auckland City combine to make the city of Auckland. Auckland City is at the centre of Auckland, although visitors should explore all four areas.
The Waitakere Ranges are less than an hour outside of the city centre and are home to some beautiful waterfalls, beaches and landscapes.
Visitors should adventure to Mount Eden or One Tree Hill, two of Auckland’s volcanoes.
Auckland Airport (Airport code AKL) is New Zealand’s busiest airport. Each year, over 13,000,000 passengers travel through the airport on approximately 160,000 flights. Auckland Airport is just over 20 kilometres outside of the city centre, in the town of Mangere. The airport can be reached from the city centre by shuttles and taxis as well as the Airbus Express bus company.
The airport serves as a hub for both Air New Zealand and Pacific Blue. Air New Zealand offers flights to the most destinations as well as the most frequent flights out of the 30 airlines flying from Auckland International Airport. After Air New Zealand, the carriers offering the most frequent service into or out of Auckland Airport are US Airways, Continental Airlines, United, Qantas, Singapore Airlines, and Alaska Airlines.
