  • 1. Poncha

If you're in Funchal then ask one of the taxi drivers to take you up to the Poncha hut, it's a little way in to the hills so it won't be extremely cheap for the taxi up there but well worth it. Once you get there it is a small hut, it also serves beer but what you really want is to stand with a glass of Poncha in the sun. They provide monkey nuts to soak up the alcohol but believe me a couple of glasses of this stuff in the sun and don't plan on doing anything for the rest of the day! Full of locals that stay there most of the day, a lot of them with guitars or similar and they sing traditional songs etc. Not many tourists visit there at the moment so it's still relatively off the beaten track but if you fancy something different, it's fantastic!

  • 2. Theatro, Funchal

Theatro is a cafe in the centre of Funchal and serves fantastic fresh juices and milkshakes, well worth a visit if you're strolling around Funchal and directly opposite Blandy's Madeira Wine Lodge

  • 3. Reeds Hotel

Reeds is the best hotel on the island but take a moment out of one of your afternoons to go there for afternoon tea (non-residents welcomed). You may well need to book yourself in but you can sample a range of pastries etc with afternoon tea or coffee. Or if you really want to splash out - have lunch or dinner there! Fantastic food and the staff are great!
