Milan S's City Tips

  • When in doubt catch a ferry. No matter where you go, it's the best value harbour cruise you'll experience.
  • If a cafe doesn't know what a 'doppio' is, move on until you find one that does.
  • Sydneysiders love random chats with curious travellers and will go out of their way to help - just ask!

No trip to Sydney is complete without a trip to Watson's Bay and a seafood splurge at Doyles. It's a tradition from the old days, when Doyles sold fish and chips to youngsters like myself, who marvelled at the huge sharks weighed in on the old wharf. Enjoy the sweeping views of the harbour!

Everything seems so playfully hedonistic here that even swimming seems like a chore. It is THE place in Sydney for 'people watching' - so much so that even the surfers spend a lot of time on their boards watching one another.

Chinatown is always busy, and a stroll down the main drag of Dixon st will leave you with the paradox of food choice. My preference is to walk another two blocks to the corner of Thomas and Quay streets where you'll find The Burlington Centre - the restaurants here are cheaper and very authentic.

Even if you've lived here all your life, taking the ferry to Manly and back remains a classic experience. Passing between north and south head, the open sea meets the harbour and you can literally feel the swell rise. Manly itself is like the Bondi of the north, but with less attitude. Except when it comes to surfing - which Manlyites claim was invented there!
