The City of Redding purchased 451 acres in 1927 for $8,500 and established Benton Airpark.Included in the land purchase was the Blue Gravel gold mine. It was the only gold mine in the United States owned by a city. It is said to be the hiding spot of stolen gold coins. The mine was named for the blue gravel waste site near the mill.
