I had stayed at a place called Hotel Ramakrishna in Mamallapuram. But after one night at the Ramakrishna, I moved one-half block down the street to the "Sri Murugan Guest House" where, for the same 1,000 rupees (single with AC), I found a much nicer room (with top-sheet and a toilet seat, two things missing at the Ramakrishna), air conditioning... The staff couldn't be friendlier or more helpful - except they never did get us the toilet paper they promised. Rather dingy, but very well located and friendliness counts for a lot.
