A nice beach resort (under European management) situated on Kokrobite beach front, the restaurant (serves European & local dishes) & has a wide view of the Atlantic ocean. Sobamba is situated about 30 km west of Accra, which is easily accessible with all types of public transport. The rooms are comfortable comprising a double bed, with en-suite facilities, its own porch, ceiling fan & DSTV.
Myself and my small boy booked this place by internet as Big Miily's only had accommodation available for some nights out of the week 18 - 23 October. When we arrived in Big Milly's we walked about 800 yards up the beach to Sobamba. The locals warned us that this part of the beach is dangerous and people may have their things stolen if they venture up here. We didn't experience any of these problems but when we arrived to Sobamba, there were workmen tearing down fences and moving rubble around the place. Apparently a Ghanaian lady who has spent time in Italy and Germany working as a hostess and her 15 year old daughter have taken it over. There was also wet paint on various things. As we had no where else to stay, we decided to make the best of it. The rooms themselves are quite nice, they have AC and comfortable bed. The bar has just water and juice which is more expensive than the other bars (2 Gh cedi for a large water and 4 for a Star beer). I didn't see any menu so can't comment on food. After one night in Sobamba, I decided that it was unsafe for my 5 year old boy to be around saws, paint and building materials and we found alternative accommodation. I called to inform them, I had paid 50 cedi on arrival which covers the cost of a single room with 10 to spare. On Sunday, myself and my young son were approached on the beach by the owner's daughter and a young man. They demanded 72 cedi from us, claiming that we had not in fact canceled the rooms. I explained to them that I had canceled and showed them the call on my mobile. To cut a long story short, we were shouted at, abused and made to feel very unsafe. The man stood threateningly over me and stuck his hand in my face saying I didn't know what would happen if I didn't give them money immediately. The young girl shouted abuse. In the end, a local intervened on me and my child's behalf and asked would they accept a compromise - the owner of one of the other hotels tried to intervene and tell them the way they are behaving is bad for tourism in the area. I only had 40 cedi on me and in the end they were persuaded to accept 32 cedi to leave us alone. I think the above experience speaks for itself. For this reason I would advise people to avoid the place.…
