We just spent three wonderful days in Powell River at the Beacon B&B. Our hosts, Shirley and Roger were so warm and welcoming; it felt like staying with good friends after the first hour. Shirley's breakfasts were delicious, generous and beautifully presented; our room was immaculately clean. They were both so helpful with information about the area.

Thanks again, Roger and Shirley, for such wonderful hospitality!

Our stay at the Beacon was most enjoyable. Both Shirley and Roger were wonderful hosts and the breakfast was a feast for the eyes and a treat for the palate. So glad we stopped here for the night. Fortunately for us the other couple staying there was delightful.

We stayed for one night at the Beacon B&B on our road trip honeymoon and I can honestly say this is one place I wish we could have stayed longer. Roger and Shirley where wonderful hosts and our room had been specially decorated with some slightly corny 'Bride and Groom' stickers ready for our arrival.

We arrived at around 845 on a Sunday night (as we had got the last ferry from Comox) and they welcomed us at the door. I was worried about finding the place but it had a well lit sign at the end of the drive as well as a string of lights across the front of the house. They showed us to our room at which point another couple turned up asking if they had room (which they did). Within 20 minutes we found ourselves sat around the dining room table exchanging stories and opinions on all sorts of different subjects with the hosts and the other couple. I mention this because we are not the most social of couples and we tend to keep ourselves to ourselves, but they were very welcoming and we couldn't say no. Within 30 minutes of sitting down, and three refusals, I was served a warmed croissant with cheese for dinner as Shirley just wouldn't let me go without (it was too late to go out and get dinner so I was just going to skip it). We ended up chatting until around midnight and I can honestly say that Roger is one of the nicest and most entertaining characters I have ever met. One thing's for sure, he won't ever turn down an opportunity for a joke (like sneaking out a huge teddy bear for us when we told them we'd seen no Bears in Banff / Jasper).

The next morning, breakfast was unbelievably well presented and absolutely delicious, (photos attached) and they even included special 'Bride and Groom' goblets to drink our orange juice out of. As we left they gave us a large muffin each to keep us going through the morning as our ferry was going to be delayed (they looked up and gave us an update on the ferry service over breakfast).

As for the key factors of a B&B, the room and bathroom was very clean and well equipped, I had a great nights sleep, the B&B is very well located just a couple of minutes from the ferry terminal, the view from the front room is truly amazing, the hosts are very nice and welcoming, and the value is unbeatable.

If you need a place to stay in Powell River, stay here. It was so good I paid $15 more than the nightly rate, which is a bit unlike me ;)

I travel a lot as a solo woman on business and for sfety concerns I have steered towards B&Bs and always had wonderfull experiences, until this one. Hosts never gave me any peace and quiet unless I locked myself away in my room. There was no private space to sit and read or work as they hovered around as soon as I ventured out of my bedroom. I don't expect total privacy at all, and enjoy meeting people which is why I like B&Bs but this was too much. Nice people but the man would even sit across the breakfast table from me and watch me eat! Creepy and too much for me. Sorry but wouldn't recommend this place because of the over bearing hosts. Price was not great either, should have some sort of price break for more than night, especially for several nights in the down season!

Thank you for taking the time to review your experience. We have heard many times from the guests that the reason they do B&B is for the interaction between the hosts and themselves. We would have appreciated if you could have been so kind as to bring any concerns you were experiecing to our attention in the moment so that we could have made appropriate adjustments for you personally, we are so sorry that we didn't detect any issues until this review. We try to be as hospitable as possible which in our opinion means not leaving guests at the breakfast table alone unless being told otherwise. Our off season is from November - April. We offer 10% off for weekly stays. We are glad that you have chosen B&B's for your mode of accommodation, every one will be as unique as the hosts themselves. Opening one's home to the world is a labour of love, we truly enjoy sharing what we have with the travelling public.

As an avid world traveler I have preferred, when possible, to stay at B&Bs rather than motels or hotels. My experiences with this form of accommodation have ranged from poor (Plymouth in Devon) to very good (Sydney, Australia).

By recent stay at the Beacon Bed and Breakfast in Powell River has given me a completely new perspective on excellence in both service and comfort.

Roger and Shirley, the hosts, do an outstanding job of caring for their guests. The breakfasts are a work of art, pleasing both to the eye and the taste buds. The rooms are comfortable, clean and tastefully decorated. The location with its view of the ocean and islands is stunning.

All this would merit a rating of “very good” but it is the meticulous care taken to provide the little details that make your stay such a pleasure and move the experience into the realms of "Exceptional."

I travel to Powell River twice a year for work. I have stayed with Shirley and Roger 3 times and look forward to go back when ever they are there. I love the fact that they are so much like a part of the family now. I look forward to and so enjoy my visits, Shirley is mindful of what I love for breakfast. It is a treat to be in their company.

What a wonderful place to stay on our trip to Powell River.. The hosts (Shirley and Roger) made us feel like home. We felt like we were visiting our warm, sweet and loving family. They entertain and take good care of their guests so well and give you recommendations on what to do and where to go in the area. The house is so nice, warm and very clean. The bedrooms are specious with comfortable beds. They pay attention to every little details to make you feel special. The breakfast was also delicious.. I can't say enough about them.. Can't wait to go back.. Thank you so much again Shirley and Roger..

We felt that we had known the owners for years and were guests in their home. Breakfast was amazing, we were treated to muffins for the road (even at 6:30AM). Shirley was a wealth of knowledge, she helped us make our dinner plans. We had our own bathroom and shower, the bedroom was so clean and comfortable. Roger was welcoming, sweet and very funny, both of them made us feel at home. Next time I am in Powell River, I will book the Beacon.

We lucked out and ended up staying with Shirley and Roger after another B&B mistakenly double booked. That owner had already arranged for us to stay at the Beacon instead. Turned out the mistake was much to our favor.

We stayed in the Serenity bedroom which features a private bathroom and a queen bed. I think I had the best sleep of our 2 week Pacific Northwest vacation in that room...beat out a Hyatt and a Fairmont for that honor.

Shirley and Roger went out of their way to make us comfortable and gave us an excellent recommendation for dinner. They went above and beyond for us because my husband left a favorite vest in that restaurant and since we were leaving on the 7am ferry, we didn't have time in the morning to retrieve it. Shirley and Roger not only got it for us after our departure, they mailed it back to us in California. Wonderful people.

I can't end without discussing the wonderful breakfast. Homemade muffins, eggs, English muffins, fruit compote....way more than we could eat.

You won't go wrong booking into this B&B when in Powell River. A wonderful experience.

We accessed Powell River on the BC Ferries Queen of Burnaby from Comox on Vancouver Island. The town appears to feature a paper mill but its biggest asset is its residents--in our case Shirley and Roger Randall, whose Beacon B & B looks out on theocean one hour from Comox. Their reception was unfailingly informative and super helpful as we dicovered salmon spawning in the local downtown park, the unspoiled village of Lund, a nearby coastal walk and details of seeing where close friends of ours had lived in Powell River some 50 years ago. Breakfast was a masterpiece of fruit and waffles. Our room was quiet and very comfortable, complete with a fully stocked bathroom. We even had a send-off gift of homemade muffins to enjoy on our next ferry as we drove south. the community and people of Powell River simply must be visited and enjoyed under the guidance of our hosts.

"The Sunrise room has a little table in it, queen size bed and a nice large closet. It's more than room enough for two. And there are blinds and a sliding door that seperate you from the other room/living area, so you don't have to worry about privacy going from the room to your own bathroom."
