A classic B&B. The bed was VERY comfortable, and the room was nicely decorated. Sadly, the ceiling of our en suite bathroom was so low that you couldn't stand up in the the shower! (see photo) Luckily we were only staying for one night (and had limited time) so didn't need to cause a fuss and got on with it... More

Hmmm it would be fantastic if we could raise the roof and stretch the car park to make everything perfect, but sadly we cannot do that and so make the very best we can with what we have. Obviously the shower is not designed to stand under, it is to use while seated in the bath to rinse with and... More

Stayed August 2012: Bed comfortable, room warm, good shower although toiletries in large bottles looked okay found that hair didn't feel clean after washing although was shiny. Breakfast plenty to start the day, car parking a bit tight at rear of hotel but at least there is parking in such a busy place as Ambleside

Thank you for your comments, we will pass on your thoughts regarding the Pure Lakes toiletries. They are different as they do not use the usual soaps and chemicals to produce the lather. Please you enjoyed your stay overall and hope to see you again soon More

Spent a very enjoyable weekend at Smallwood House in Ambleside. The guest house is spacious and comfortable. Christine and Anthony are friendly and informative hosts, which came in very useful when bad weather diverted us from our planned walking route and we had to find a Plan B. Breakfast was memorable, freshly cooked and carefully selected ingredients - I have... More

We went for a family celebration weekend and it couldn't have been better. Lovely accommodation, well equipped rooms, spotlessly clean, great breakfasts to suit all tastes - what more can you ask! The owners and staff were helpful and knowledgeable about the town and the area generally - Ambleside is a great place to be based with lots of cafes... More

We stayed for the bank holiday as a large family group. It's an independent guesthouse and my room was a bit tired (peeling paper) but others looked very new and fresh, and it was certainly spotlessly clean and bright. The staff were helpful and friendly and they dealt well with our large & varied group. Some fresh fruit at breakfast... More

Thank you for your comments. We did enjoy having your family staying with us. Sorry about the peeling paper in the room, sadly this occurs when people dry clothing in the room and of course the effects of the shower. We do try to keep on top of this, but it had obviously got the better of us. We do... More

So plesed you enjoyed your stay. The bed is a 'zip and link' bed, not 2 singles pushed together, they are designed to be used as a double or two singles to give us more flexibility, but yes they are also extremely comfortable. More

We stayed at Smallwood House for two nights in April. I cannot fault the place. The owners are so friendly and helpful. The location is fantastic, with many restaurants close by (Matthew's Brasserie is just next door and was excellent value). The highlight of our stay was breakfast, a huge choice, all cooked to order. I had the most perfect... More
