From the first moment to the final goodbye, the friendly Nigel and Julie made us feel very welcome. The B&B is perfectly located, and with three rooms feels comfortable, cosy, and peaceful, and you can certainly tell that much attention has been paid to the details: from the delicious-smelling shower gel, to the fresh kippers for breakfast, and the port... Warm welcome from Nigel on arrival. Stockghyll room was lovely and comfortable with a view of the waterwheel. Everything was spotless and beautifully decorated. Some excellent touches - parking permit, homemade chocolate cake, decanter with port, tea tray, soft towels and nice toiletries. Breakfast was freshly prepared and there was a good choice of fresh fruit salad, cereal, yogurt, juice... More

Cannot thank the couple running this b&b enough. Lovely rooms, great breakfast and they were tons of help for finding walks of surrounding areas. Even had chocolate cake ready in room for us when we came back. Fantastic. More

We love staying at the Waterwheel so much we've made in our annual winter break. Julie and Nigel are the best hosts, making us feel so welcome. Nigel makes the best chocolate cake, which is just what you need when playing cards in their cosy breakfast room on a cold November afternoon! Breakfast is a treat. The room and the fab... More

stayed this weekend, was a very pleasant weekend with lovely hosts and room and fab breakfast. We will definately return and have come home chilled and rested (well apart form all of the walking and sightseeing). Had a great meal in Matthews Bistro and the Waterwhell is in a fab position and full of character. More

We stayed at the Waterwheel in September 2011. We loved the central location (but in a quiet little street tucked away from the town centre); Nigel and Julie were really friendly and we felt very comfortable staying in their house! The breakfast was one of the best we had on our holiday. It can be a little tight getting up... More

I booked this as a surprise silver wedding celebration night after researching ambleside b and bs and hotels on Tripadvisor as I find their reviews on the most part a good indicator of what a place is actually like. You obviously have to read a few to gauge consensus, but it has always stood us in good stead. This was... More

Nigel and Julie gave us the perfect welcome to Ambleside. Homemade chocolate cake in our room on arrival was a great start and every aspect of our 3 night stay hit the mark. The Loughrigg room was cosy and spotless with a very comfortable bed. It was lovely waking to the sound of the river outside every morning, before going... More

We visited during October half term and although very busy, Julie and Nigel took the time to make us feel very welcome and ensure we had a great stay. We booked the Loughrigg room (which I think is the smallest) but still very comfortable. Very clean and nice little touches such as the homemade cake and port and luxury toiletries.... More

My wife and I had a super stay at The Waterwheel and will be going back for sure! Nigel and Julie were the perfect hosts and made us feel very welcome. The chocolate cake they provide on arrival is delicious...only wished I'd asked for more! More
