I stayed here recently during a weekend in Whitby with my partner. We loved thequirky atmosphere of the hotel and the excellent service we received from the manager, waitresses and even the cleaning staff. The room we stayed in was beautifully decorated with a lot of the authentic period features on display. There was a vast selection of hot beverages... More

We booked this as part of a groupon offer and were really pleased with our stay. The charming old world mixed with contemporary styling gave a great ambience as we entered through a small bar area. Our room was fine with a large bathroom that had recently been refurbed. Teas, coffee, biscuits and a bottle of water each were nice... More

Jackie - Thank you for taking the time to place a review. I am glad you enjoyed your stay. Its a pity that you didn't eat with us (apart from Breakfast which often does leave people full for the day!). As I have said elsewhere on here, the WH&G really is a Restaurant with Rooms so staying here without eating... More

Called in on the off chance of a table as we were visiting Whitby for the weekend for our anniversary. The food was very good, the bloke had the belly pork and loved it, although not sure if he should have had veg with it or not ( he didn't), I had the braised onions which I loved. Very quaint,... Lindilou - thank you for the review. I am lad you enjoyed your meal. Just to clear it up, the Belly Pork (at the moment!) is served on a Puy Lentil and Chorizo Casserole under a Grain Mustard Sauce. It is not accompanied by root vegetables but we are always happy to do a side dish if guests would like... More

I stayed two nights here with a friend, we had the Discovery room which is in the attic of the hotel so some lovely views over the roof tops and into the harbour. The room was nicely decorated with quite a bit of room although if you are tall like my friend you do have to duck occasionally, lovely furnishings... More

Justine - thank you for the great review. I am glad you enjoyed your stay. The breakfast is a meal that we are particularly proud of so I will share your comments with our Breakfast Chefs. Wise words about the car-park also. Early or later on is the best with the Church Street Car Park. Noon on a bank holiday... More

This was my first ever Groupon booking, and since I had such a great time I would seriously consider returning - although I don't think our room warranted full price. We arrived on a drizzly Friday in March and the old fashioned doorway was a welcome sight! Parking is conveniently only a few yards away, £6 for 24 hours is... More

Jesspops - Thank you for your review. I think you have hit the nail on the head! The White Horse & Griffin is a Restaurant with Rooms rather than a hotel. I know it is a fine distinction, but if guests just want a base in Whitby, a TV and a bacon-and-egg breakfast from the accomodation then this is not... More

Just returned from a Bank Holiday break, Hotel is quaint and whacky, but has been cleverly modernised considering its age.We stayed in 'Provider' meaning not too many stairs, plenty of room and a 'sunken bath'. Plenty of tea, coffee and bikkies and a great flat screened TV. When you look out of the window you can even see herds of Wildebeast!.....The... More

Liz - Thank you for the great review and I am glad you enjoyed the view - the Wildebeast aren't always out roaming the plains so not everyone gets to see them! Sorry I missed you but at least you got to meet Ed - you must forgive him, he's from Barcelona....On the massively plus side I managed to go... More

Excellent meal, steak cooked as requested, Andrew very helpful, attentive and knowledgable. Handled my grumpiness over chips with skins on with great humour and promises skinless chips for me next time with prior notice. Great cheeseboard.

We stayed for one evening. From the moment we arrived the staff were so helpful offering to take our bags to the room. The room was recently furnished, lovely new carpet. Gazzatron99 – great name incidentally – thank you for your review. I am delighted that you enjoyed your stay. I was particularly pleased to be able to pass our comments to Mary, our Head of House Keeping. Mary and her team have worked extremely hard to help us turn around the business and often go un-noticed so, again, thank you.... More

Stayed two nights at end of April on a KGB deal and what excellent value. There was quite a lot of work going on so would have been unhappy if paying full price. Location is great in the centre of town, no parking but nearest is only a few hundred yards away on Church Street at £6.00 for 24 hours.... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The White Horse & Griffin is an almost 450 year old Coaching Inn, the first built in Whitby to serve the route to London. Operating these days as a Restaurant with Rooms it is situated on an unspoilt cobbled shambles near the base of Whitby's famous 199 Abbey Steps. The building is technically on 3 floors but is actually on 7 different levels. It boasts 10 unique and quirky bedrooms full of history and character. The walls are bumpy, the stairs are narrow and the ceilings are low. The Bistro/ Restaurant is cosy and heated by an open fire. The food is outstanding with the signature dishes (such as the Seafood Meze for 2 & the Fillet Sharing Platter) saying much about the place - great quality, great quantity, designed for sharing and, as with much in life, you get what you are prepared to pay for. The WH&G is best suited to couples and groups who want to get away, eat great food, drink good wine, meet new people, join in with the atmosphere and then retire to a hand-made bed with a hand stuffed mattress to regroup before a chef-cooked breakfast. As well as a comprehensive English Breakfast choices in the morning also include Fortune's Kippers, Smoked Haddock, Kedgeree, Scrambles, Omlettes, Fresh Fruits and Honeyed Porridge. A major benefit is that the heart of unspoiled North Yorkshire and its Coast is outside the front door in either walking or steam train distance. ... more   less
