We have been to the Horse and Groom twice this month. Clearly a popular pub both for food and drink. We had lunch both times, there was a good choice on the chalk board menu, and all three of us chose differently and we were all very satisfied. The food was piping hot, well cooked and plenty of it!. There are several well-established pubs in West Ashling. This one dates from the seventeenth century with unspoilt character - beams, scrubbed wooden tables, rooms of old-world proportions. But this place is lifted from others of its kind by superb bar staff, friendly and knowledgeable. An extensive range of real ales and wines. A varied menu, with our choices delivered without... More

Having eaten and drunk here a few times in the past four years since friends moved to the area we have always liked the pub. In fact it's a great pub. Stayed over night this visit and on balance it was good except for the bed being much to hard for us so didn't sleep at all well and sheets... More

Can't comment on the accommodation but the bar manager Nick is a STAR! He is a total example of a genial and attentive host - and I think he should be head hunted. The beer (£2.80)and wine (£3.30) are reasonably priced and the food ( judged by Ham Egg and Chips £7.95) is excellent. Don't really want the world to... More

My wife and I have stayed here twice now and seeing some of the negative comments by previous visitors thought we would tell of a totally different experience. On both occasions we have been made more than welcome by all of the staff including the landlady. Our accommodation was a twin ensuite and was slightly bigger than some of the... More

Booking three nights B&B over the phone was not a problem and was advised that if we arrived between 3.00 - 6.00 p.m., when the bar was closed, we were to phone upon our arrival in the car park. Received and warm and friendly greeting from the landlady and after confirming the booking details we were shown to our room,... More

By far and away The Best Food in the South, other aspect of the pub/accomodation are not so good though, but worth a visit to enjoy the fine dining on offer, local ingredients. Service can be a little slow sometimes, but worth the wait for freshly cooked food.

This pub is lovely inside and is in a great location but the customer service needs work. Despite the pub only being half full the staff seemed unable to cope, plates weren't cleared, sauces weren't provided and food/drinks were very slow to arrive. Also, despite specifically requesting a high chair when booking the table there wasn't one available when we... More

Stayed here for a wedding and found the landlord to be really welcoming, ESP given that we were a large group of 30 somethings. Rooms perfectly fine although sheets and blankets not adequate for weather and pillows could do with replacing. Pub is lovely. So cosy and food Is nice.

My wife and I stayed at the Horse and Groom for 3 nights. We found the publican, his wife and all of the staff to be absolutley great. They were warm, approachable and happy to assist a couple of Aussies who had never been to West Sussex before. We paid full price for our accommodation and meals and did not... More
