Pros: really excellent staff and a great location - this hostel is a short (uphill) walk from the central train station, and right in the center of everything. The showers are definitely the best I've ever seen in a hostel and the mattresses are amazingly comfortable. Plus it's got a bunch of nice extras - powerstrips in the rooms for... More

I have never experienced anything similar before. We are not talking about a hostel when talking about THE INDEPENDENTE but about a historical portuguese mansion, where everybody feels at home and as a big family. It is unique from inside out: an amazing, caring and loving staff which makes you feel home and part of that beautiful place and town... More

When I was told that I would be put up in a hostel for 3 months as part of a European Union-funded internship programme, I was more than a little apprehensive. The Independente, however, is not your average hostel. Its location is unbeatable, with one of the city's best panoramic views visible from the living room and bedrooms, whilst also... More

I was there for 5 days, some days were good and other less. There was lots of noise, not the fault of the staff but other guest. The rooms were big, the washroom clean, computer available for everyone. Everything was cleaned every day. I had a great time there.

Beautiful hostel: Great staff, great ambiance, nice rooms (suites are the best), perfect location (in the centre of Lisbon). We were there with a group of 66 girls. Every girl enjoyed it a lot. The staff was really friendly and helpful. We got a few tips from them for nice places to see and clubs to go out and restaurants... More

I stayed at the Independente for about a week and had an amazing time. Not only were the rooms and bunk beds really cool, but the whole hostel had a hip, modern vibe and it was very easy meeting new people. I traveled alone but I would also highly recommend it for people traveling with friends. The staff was extremely... More

Good hostel, individually locked rooms with key card access, basic breakfast included, decor is a bit odd for my tastes but each to their own. Bathrooms were clean, staff friendly. Free computer usage in each floor. It demonstrates what a hostel should provide travellers.

Cozy, amazing value, friendly service! The hostel is in a perfect location, situated at the top of one of Lisboa's 7 hills, with a view of the Miradouro Sao Pedro de Alcantara (complete with open air cafes fountain and a gorgeous view:: of Chiado, Lisbon's "downtown" area, and historic landmarks like the Castle and Se, and the River Tejo). The... More

an excellent hostel offering exceptional value for money and first class hospitality. The building - the former residence of the Swiss Ambassador to Portugal - retains a grand atmosphere with large rooms and tall ceilings. It possesses a laid-back atmosphere with eclectic styling and charming, helpful, multi-lingual staff. Breakfast (cereal, juice, hot chocolate/tea/coffee, ham, cheeses and bread with jam) is... More

If you want to sleep friday and saturday nights be aware noise is quite loud. Located right next to area with lots of bars. Also panoramic view over the city from the park in front of hostel. Staff was friendly and advised you any way they could. Bar in downstairs seemed to be quite popular.
