Had a short break in the summer : Kalevala was quiet but the service was great. The room was comfortable, the food was very good (and a great surprise, good for vegetarians) and the views all round were beautiful. The sauna and lake were brilliant - we felt really invigorated. Would go back just for that!

Hotel is situated at close ski trails and lake, about 5km to city/ village. The rooms were basic decoration and equipment. The restaurant was ok, buffet style. In lovely position beside beautiful lake. All the staff were friendly and charming. The food wasn't great, but perhaps that's just Finland! Spent the night in bear hide photographing bears - fascinating but exhausting. Worth it if you have the stamina.

We stayed for 2 nights and had 2 connecting rooms. Bikes and scooters (non-motorised type) can be rented from the hotel and there are lovely cycling paths through the forest starting right outside the door.
