I stayed at this "guesthouse" in summer 2007, on the weekend of the Reykjavik marathon & "Culture Night". Travelling with a friend, we booked a twin room online, in the full knowledge that this place was some distance from the centre of the city & thus required a bus journey to and from. The details of which bus to catch (provided by the website, if memory serves) were incorrect and we actually ended up going a VERY long way round the suburbs of the city before arriving, although of course this is not the fault of the guesthouse itself - merely a warning to check it all out before travelling. Ideally, I'd suggest you need to hire a car to stay here - it's a good hour's walk from the dock area in the city, and taxis are expensive. The bus stop is about 5-10 mins walk from the guesthouse, too. On arrival, we found that (due to the fact it was one of the busiest weekends in Reykjavik's year), our room booking had not been properly held. Therefore we ended up with a double room, instead of the twin we'd booked. The place went from bad to worse when, amazingly, the owner charged us considerably MORE than we'd booked the rooms for online. Utterly reprehensible, and not something I've ever experienced anywhere in the world, and (I would have thought) possibly not even legal. However, due to the fact that all the other hotels in the city were booked out, it was not possible to say no. So, grudgingly and basically held over a barrel, we coughed up the cash. The woman's only explanation was that the website had not charged enough! Totally unacceptable, particularly given that we did not even get the room we booked. Incredibly, despite the fact that the "double" bed in the room could be split into two singles, the hotel did not have appropriate bedding for this, and we were not "allowed" to do so, despite having originally booked a twin. I realise this is a budget place, and I've stayed in plenty of cheap places in my time, but this was, again, pretty unacceptable, all things considered. The "guesthouse" is a strange place to begin with; it's basically in a neighbourhood of industrial/commercial prefab units, and it upstairs from a small garage, IIRC. Iceland is a very safe place of course, but for solo female travellers I'd imagine the extremely quiet location (there are no houses anywhere nearby) would be off-putting, especially if you're car-less. The advertised outdoor hot-tub was not working during our stay, and is on a grubby balcony overlooking a car-park, so I wouldn't go near it anyhow. Otherwise, the place is very basic - rooms were clean enough and seemed warm, although ambient noise was a little high (presumably the walls, being more or less in a converted commercial unit/workshop were rather thin). No breakfast provided that we could find, and there's NOWHERE near the place to get food as far as I could tell, so you'll need to bring your own. A fridge and small sink are provided, however. Showers were shared, and actually pretty good, although weirdly they're basically cubicles in the middle of the main corridor. Overall, the facilities were VERY basic but pretty clean and functional. Based on the way we were treated here, and the fact that it's in the middle of absolutely nowhere (relatively) and a lengthy bus journey from the city centre, and the fact that (unless you pay with a credit card before you arrive) they might charge you whatever the hell they feel like regardless of what you booked it for, I really wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. In terms of overall service (and the aforementioned rip-off), I'd say it's about the worse place I've stayed in the EU.…
