The George hotel is not a modern trendy hotel catering for young clubbers who want to sit drinking cocktails till 4am. If however you are looking for a historical hotel in the oldest town in england then this is a hotel for you. All the staff were frindly and very hepfull, service was fast and efficient, the food was very... More

I use to go to the George Hotel to use the bar area and have a spot of lunch with friends and family. Since the the hotel has been taken over and is now part of a chain it has really gone down hill. I would point out that I have not stayed over night so cannot speak for the... More

Squeaky floors add to the authenticity to a very old building. The staff were very pleasant and I had a comfy nights sleep. The rooms were clean and in character with the hotel. Breakfast was great with a good menu with even porridge made to your ratio's if water and milk including the consistency. The night manager was even cheerful... More

The evening of arrival we were well cared, but the following two evenings an unfriendly and unprofessional night porter highlighted that guests were not wanted in the lounge after 10.30 by not asking for orders, despite requests and by placing cleaning utensils next to us. Also friends were not allowed in the lounge after 10:30. The booking system was misleading:... More

With the hotel being on the high street it is right in the middle of the buz. It suffers from being a very old building not best suited to being an hotel {the floor boards creak like some kind of alarm system}. This does however add a great deal of individuality to the rooms. The bar always has some life... More

This is a lovely quaint little hotel. The room was clean, quiet and comfortable. The location is central. The price is reasonable. I needed to come for a day in January and I came back again in April and both times found the staff friendly and helpful. If you need a comfortable place to stay right in the centre of town,rather... Although the hotel does make it clear on their website that there is no lift it does not emphasise enough that the hotel is really unsuitable for anyone with any walking difficulties - the stairs from 1st to 2nd floor are very narrow, very steep and could be dangerous. Rooms were good, bathrooms nice although the shower in my room... More

Very central and nice location, pleasant enough hotel and steeped in history, my room was a little tired and the bathroom tiny but it was ok for the price I guess, the bar was friendly and have no complaints. The lounge was very old fashioned with lovely arm chairs and old paintings - quite cool I guess.

Our initial welcome at 12 noon was you can't check in yet, we were too early. No problem but no positive vibes. When Stacey arrived on reception then things turned friendly and professional with a can do, can help approach. Anthony is a great ambassador for the hotel and greeted us with a big handshake as the first dour girl... More

Comfortable bar, nice restaurant, staff ok, rooms tired, dirty poorly maintained and uncomfortable. Car parking is an impossible nightmare to find. I paid for an executive room upgrade, so goodness knows what the other rooms were like! Definitely not recommended.
