I stayed at this place for the weekend starting October 6th. This Inn has some things going for it. A large, paved parking lot. Attractive exterior. Beautiful garden in the back. Free WIFI. A tastefully decorated hallway. Even though the restaurant was not opened for the off-season, breakfast supplies were made available in the restaurant area. It was also left open after hours, as a sort of lounging area. But all was not rosy. The lounging area seemed to be a sort of apology for the small hotel room. There were four of us. We could not avoid being in each other's personal space. The beds were small and uncomfortable. The TV reception was below par. And then there was the water.... Did I mention the water? I've been in places where the water was discolored, but drinkable. Given that, and the fact that there was nary a boiling order sign, I made the mistake of gulping down some of the water, and using it for brushing my teeth. BTW, there was free bottled water in the room. But that's not a strong enough indicator of the cost of missing the hint. How can I relate the results, without offering insult? I was as a donkey auctioneer. I had to show my ass at a lot of places to close the deal. During peak season, with long days, warm, sunny weather, and the restaurant open, The Edge of Avalon might be a reasonable pick. Not so on October 6th. The locals told us of a legendary "restaurant a half hour up the road." But, any time after eight - You might as well be searching for the Edmund Fitzgerald. I guarantee you, you will get that sinking feeling. I'll sum it up. Peak season, give it a go. After September, it's best advertised as a place offering basic accommodations, and that's it. The fact that the restaurant is no longer full service in post season, the fact that the small rooms become a bigger disadvantage during inclement weather, the fact that the garden is not as much of an asset when it's cold outside.....I think that the price should better reflect these disadvantages. Did I mention the water? Listen to Sammy Kershaw, he said it a couple of decades back : DON'T GO NEAR THE WATER!!!!

One night stay on our way through the Irish loop unable to see anything as the fog rolled in that day. Excellent reception with wonderful people and helpful waitress giving us warm Newphie hospitality. Food was awesome as well. Appreciated the continental breakfast.

Stopped in for lunch and we were very impressed. It’s everything you expect a small Newfoundland cafe to be. Comfortable with friendly staff, a good menu, not too large but enough choices, affordable, nice view of the harbour and excellent food. Hubby had the fish cakes and seafood chowder. You get two nice sized fish cakes with a nice zesty dipping sauce, not too fishy, perfectly balanced with potatoes and spices and nicely breaded. The chowder was the best he’s ever had and he’s tried a lot of them. Nice creamy broth but not pasty thick, lots of big chunks of seafood and veggies. I had the chicken on a bun with the house salad. Both were excellent, the chicken sandwich was a large chicken breast in a little and crispy batter, inside the chicken was moist and tender, served with mayo and lettuce, it was perfect. The salad was a nice surprise, mixed greens, cranberries, veggies and a good balsamic dressing, really very nice salad. Everything was very good, came quickly and was affordable, the staff were friendly and attentive.

The food was wonderful and served piping hot. The fish chowder was full of big chunks of seafood, highly recommend. Service was friendly and fast. The French fries are delicious. Try the Iceberg beer, we enjoyed it. Great stop for lunch on the Irish Loop.

While driving the Irish Loop on the Avalon Peninsula, we spotted this Inn and Restaurant. We ordered the usual- fish cakes, battered cod with fries. After three weeks in NL and having eaten quite a bit of the same this was the BEST cod and fries we had the whole trip from west to east coast. Service was great. The lady who waited on us was superior. Prices were good.

Wonderful view and a very nice little restaurant. Stylish decor. Wide selection of food on the menu. Naturally I went for the seafood fettuccine. Plus I started with the seafood chowder. Personable staff of course….you’re in Newfoundland.

We stopped here for lunch after visiting Mistaken Point. They have a great view of the ocean. Fantastic staff. Lovely restaurant. They had the best fish cakes I’ve ever eaten. The fish chowder and pea soup were also very good. Would return again for sure.

So if I could rate the restaurant it would be 5. The food was great as was the very pleasant staff. Great place to stop half way through the Irish Loop. The hotel part however has issues. Maybe it was just our room but it had a very unpleasant musty smell. I wanted to see if they had another room but we simply tried to sleep with the window somewhat open. The room was spacy. Found an ant in the bathroom. The water is yellowish and we were warned not to drink it. At least they provided free water bottles. The wifi was horrible. Maybe it was our location. In summary, eat here but maybe not sleep here.

Response from EdgeoftheAvalon Inn, Owner at Edge Of The Avalon Inn
Responded Aug 30, 2022
Hello, Thanks for taking the time to share your experience. We do indeed provide water for our guests as there are tannins in our towns supply that cause the discoloration. It's perfectly safe for washing up just not for drinking. We have two modems at The Inn because it is such a large space; one for the restaurant and one for the rooms. We suggest signing in to one or the other depending on where you are trying to access the internet. Yes it is muggy here as we live by the sea and are often ensconced in fog. Our cleaners are amazing at what they do and take pride in their work at the Inn. We will have to have a word with that ant! He was not invited.... In our own humble opinion. part of the charm of rural Newfoundland is to get back to the simple things. So we are glad our staff took such good care of you. They really are the salt of the earth kind of people. Take care!

This Inn is very centrally located on the Irish Loop, close to Mistaken Point, Cape Race, St. Vincent's, etc. The rooms are very clean, comfortable and quiet, and some (including ours) had a nice view of the water. The hosts are friendly and helpful. There is a restaurant on site with a good range of options. No complaints from us!
