A really lovely small personal hostel that has a great homely feel. The common area is great with guitars, piano, ukelele(sp?!) comfy corner, art area etc. we arrived to a group meal being cooked where you pay what you think as well as cake another day. We had a double room which was small but big enough. About a 10minute... More

The Albatross Backpacker Inn in Kaikoura is a nice backpacker inn. You feel that the owners are really passionate about what they do. They organise BBQ, planted fresh herbs for the guests to use free of charge and there is a nice vibe about this place. However, there are numerous practical issues. There are not enough showers, we woke up... More

We went here following a recommendation and would recommend it 100times over. A friendly, quirky and homely place. Close to all the fab things to do in kaikora but also there's plenty going on in the hostel to entertain you for days on end. Hostel owner Ben was really welcoming and knowledgable about what's going on in the local area... More

Ben was super friendly with lots of good advice about what to do in the area. There was a big communal dinner that all were invited to join/contribute to. Big common room and lots of outdoor seating...a great place to chill out!

The Albatross is widely known as a great place and now that I've visited I know why. Staff is great. The common areas are so much fun with lots to do including an art corner with paints. The place is largely decorated with art done in house by patrons. Kitchen is functional, clean and well stocked. Rooms are clean and... More

I called and booked a dorm at Albatross after reading reviews and mostly because of its location as well since It's really close to the dolphin encounter office, the only activity I had booked in Kaikoura. However, upon arrival I was informed they'd made a double booking and that I could not stay there. The reception guy smiled, shrugged and... More

I loved my time at The Albatross! As previous reviewers have already said, it feels like a home away from home and is the perfect pick-me up for the weary traveller. Fantastic communal atmosphere with incredibly friendly staff, huge communal area and well-kept rooms. The most relaxing hostel experience I've ever had, and I've stayed in a fair few hostels... More

I cannot express my love for this place. It is my definite home away from home. I stayed for a couple of days during my playtime in the magical land of Kaikoura. A welcoming, cosy place with book nooks, art corners and an incredibly warm atmosphere. The outdoor area is great a spacious play spot. This place has everything a... More

There were definite pluses and minuses for staying at this hostel. On the plus side great location close to the town centre and 5 minutes walk to the dolphin encounters office which is great if you are on one of the early morning trips. The owners were warm and friendly and have gone to a lot of trouble to create... More

We really liked to stay in that hostel with its excellent location and all those lovely details such as free herbs from the kitchen garden, free fair trade coffee (no instant!) and the opportunity to take a shower after a boat trip (even after you checked out already).
