We scoped out reviews for the backpackers in Oamaru before going and thought we would try out this one. The girl on reception was lovely. Backpackers was pretty quiet by the looks of it, I think I saw 3 other guests during the evening/morning we were there. Two other girls in the 6 space room we shared ...the nights sleep... More

Built in 1867, this is a great location for all that Oamaru has to offer we got the only room available it was small 3 bed- double with single bunk above, The facilities were very good and the basement apart from the laundry had games and music rooms instrument's for the use of guest, staff very helpful and polite.

Loved this hostel- there were hardly any other guests when I stayed so it was very nice and quiet. The kitchen was clean and tidy and the movie selection and wood-burning stove made the sitting room cozy. I loved that the staff has created a large board of activities to do in the area which really added a personal touch... More

We stayed for one night in a double room. We found the staff to be knowledgable, helpful and friendly. The room was small with not much room for anything else but was clean as were the bathrooms. Centrally located and very good value for money.

Stayed here - it was great - tidy, comfortable, not noisy, clean - lovely fireplace in the lounge area, freindly host - top budget spot - I paid $42 for a single room. Really handy to everything in oamaru - would definately stay again.

The service here is impeccable, the atmosphere is great, prices are reasonable. Escaped from Swaggers Backpackers nearby (what a nightmare!) and were lucky to have chosen Empire as a safe getaway. I came to Oamaru for a steampunk festival. This hotel really does represent the friendly, laidback character of Oamaru and is a historically rich landmark that celebrates its own... More

Great staff, great location (centre of town- easy to find from the bus stop), interesting (i.e. historic) building. Would definitely recommend this place for anyone staying in Oamaru.
