We were backpacking the South Island for a few weeks last year and stayed here in May 2012 at the end of the season. This didn't really strike me as a backpackers as it was so nice! We were lucky enough to have the place to ourselves, so effectively had a self catering holiday let at backpacker rates! I'm sure... More

We were recommend this home by the owners of another BBH lodge and we were really pleased that they lead us to this cosy , friendly and very professionally run backpacker hostel . Shayne and Tanya were very easy going and able to offer different activity options with no fuss at all and treated us as we were all best... More

This is the most wonderful place, more of hotel than a backpackers hostel. The surroundings are breathtaking and, being at the end of the road, so peaceful. We received a really warm welcome from Tanya and were pleased that we were up graded from a double bedroom to the self contained annexe. This was very well equipped, spotless and comfortable.... This place was such a great find; it is right next to the beautiful Queen Charlotte Track and the views from the jetty are unbelievable. It is such a homely, relaxing place to stay, with hammocks, free tea/coffee, a barbecue and a really cute dog! If you go onto the jetty at night the stars are awesome. The free kayak... More

I stayed one night at this wonderful place, and didn't want to leave. It is so clean, well appointed rooms, comfy beds, and has a great location next to the Queen Charlotte Sounds Track, beside a beautiful bay. Small and homely. But most of all Tanya and Shayne run this place wonderfully and offer such a warm welcome and service... More

Gorgeous accomodation in a fab location! Called a backpackers, but that's a little modest! It's beautiful and the nicest backpackers we have stayed in! Tanya and Shayne have basically opened up their home and it really is a home! Lovely open and light lounge with a clean and well equiped kitchen (they even have food and meals for sale if... More

I totally agree with the other glowing reviews! We just loved this place and will definitely be coming back sometime soon. The location is just beautiful and the accommodation itself is clean, tidy, comfortable and well-priced. What really makes it special though are Tanya and Shayne, who are such warm and welcoming natural hosts. Within a day it felt like... More

Our stay at Anakiwa Backpackers was awesome. The hosts, Shane and Tanya, are wonderful people and talented at making their guests feel at home and comfortable. The place is cosy, clean, and quiet, and the possible activities are abundant. Check out the biolumenescent critters!

Another classic end-of-the-road Kiwi lodge with a superb location at the start of the QCT. My wife and I hiked out one the track one evening and it was beautiful. There are kayaks available (for free, unlike most lodges) and it's an easy 1 or 2 km paddle to a nearby beach, passing nesting shags and scenic coves. The rooms... More

We loved our time here. You can either go crazy hiking, kayakking, boating, fishing and much much more. Or you can hang out and chill in one of their hammocs or hammoc chairs. Go watch the stars or the glow wors at night. You might encounter a Weka or a possum. The accomodation was super clean. I can recommend it... More
