The Beach Hostal in Iquique, Chile is located at Vivar 1707, about a block from Playa Cavancha. First the good: It is a good location, just a few minutes from a nice beach and 10-15 minutes walk from the city center. Nice common areas, comfortable sofas and WiFi (ask for the secret code). Quite cheap, $10,000 CLP for a single room with private bathroom. Nice and helpful staff. Now the bad: No common-use computer to access internet (if you ask to use the one in the office, they might allow it, but not for long periods of time), so if you do not bring your own laptop, you are out of luck. However, it's not too big of a deal because there are several internet cafes within a few minutes' walk. My single room with private bathroom was not great. My biggest complaint was that the bathroom was smelly (and the smell came into the room). There was also no toilet paper or soap (had to buy both). Oh and NO HOT WATER (well the first night I did get hot water for about 60 seconds, then it went cold...the next two nights I only got cold water). There is a fully equipped kitchen, as advertised, but there is a sign on the door that prohibits its use by guests. Breakfast consisted of 2 slices of white bread with a slice of cheese in the middle. And instant coffee. "Cable" TV consisted of about 6 channels that were extremely fuzzy. The best channel to come through Animal Planet, which was not so bad I guess. No remote. Pretty dead social scene...I may have come at an off time, but there were few travelers staying there. So all in all, not a horrible option, but you might try somewhere else. I was not all that impressed, although it's quite cheap, so I cannot complain too much.…
