Decided to do a photo tour of downtown penang the other day. So decided the most convenient lodging would be somewhere in town and I chose Cathay Hotel. Its an old bungalow converted into a 53 room basic hotel..really not sure what star rating I should give it really. All in all, I must say it was an excellent choice.... More

I stayed at this place for 2 nights during my last family trip in Dec 2012. I was brought here by my father who used to stayed here about 30 years ago.I was amazed with the hotel when i reached, love the nostalagia exterior & interior and the east-meet-west victorian-chinese deco. The room that i stayed was huge (it was... More

the building's architecture is grand and when you enter the atrium you'll meet two stairs facing eachother divided by the internal patio that are quite imposing, but everything there is faded and old,the rooms are quite large with wooden floor,we have slept in both kind, in the front and in the rear of the building, the noise coming from the night... Walking into the Cathay hotel is like stepping back in time. Yes its a little run down and nothing seems to have changed here for years but that is all part of its charm. All of the original features remain, the public areas and atrium are impressive, as are the size of the rooms. I doubt if you could spend... More

Convenient is about the only good word to describe this hotel. Dirty and cigarette butt on the floor, check in was with somebody smoking. The hot water available was not bottled water but tap water. Bath towels sooooooooooooo thin. Choose a room at the rear so as to avoid the noise from the restaurant area opposite.

First the good parts. The room was very big and the water pressure amazing for soutj east asia. Location was good as well, the rooms were quite cheap. But everything is very old, furniture Just thrown together from all corners, especially bathroom was dirty, towels torn. Drfinetely needs renovation. Unless neccessary (maraton in town, most of the hotels full) we... More

At first glance I thought I had lucked on to a great find! The hotel has an interesting and airy atrium with a bit of old world charm. HOWEVER once in the room I was sorely disappointed. There were dirt stains on the wall, a scrap of rubbish from the previous guest and an entirely hideous bathroom! There was no... More

I really wanted to give this hotel a chance, (tried three nights!) it’s a good price for a large room with en suite facilities - currently 81 RM (about £16 a night) ideal for backpackers looking for a bit more than a dorm bed or for couples - great to have two big beds far apart for the snorers. The... More

We stayed in Cathay Hotel for two nights during a backpackers' trip around Malaysia, and I have to say it was probably the best low budget hotel I visited. The hotel has a really romantic quaint charm. The rooms are huge and well ventilated. The three old Chinese at the reception were always very attentive with us. They helped us... More
