The hotel has been recently renovated and it looks really nice. The staff was wonderful and very helpful. They do mention a curfew, i believe it is 1 am, but we talked to the person at the front desk and he told us not to worry about it, just to call him so he can open the door. The staff... More

My family just visited kyoto and chosen Matsui Honkan to experience Japanese Ryokan. The location is so excellent, so we only paid taxi for 1ooo yen from kyoto station to arrive there. That day, kyoto was so hot like about 36-38c. The lobby was no A/C upon our arrival due to "saving energy", and it looked very old-fashion.However, we stayed... More

It was my partner's first and my second time at a Ryokan. My partners is some kind of "five stars only person" and I must admit I was concerned about her reaction to the Ryokan. Thanks to the excellent service and the outstanding food at Matsui, my partner and I really enjoyed our stay in Kyoto. My partner wants to... More

My family just returned from a wonderful initiation into the ryokan experience. On our first visit to Japan we decided to book a ryokan for one night preceding our hotel stay in Kyoto. Our criteria were price range, good reviews and proximity to our hotel. We couldn’t have made a better choice. We arrived early and the staff happily kept... More

The good: Check-in was flawless. but all decent hotels give you tea and a snack these days. The location was good, right near the fish market. But with few streets in english it was hard to find at night. Right next to bike rental place. Friendly staff. The bath was ok. Bad: They gave my GF and I the smallest... More

Very friendly staff, good sized clean rooms, excellent food, great bathing facilities and a central location. My favourite hotel experience in Japan.

Our experience in Matsui Hotel was great since the beginning. They were waiting for us and received us with the traditional green tea, a Japanese sweet, maps of the area and what not. Very courteous people. The room was small but had everything we needed. Even though it is a hotel, the service made you feel completely in a traditional... More

We stayed for 3nts and were impressed as soon as we walked through the doors and were met by traditionally dressed staff. Room was simple, as it should be, but admittedly had no view. We’d booked a room with ensuite, but it was absolutely tiny. OK for the loo, but difficult to shower in. My hubbie was a bit worried... More

Superbly located in the middle of the most lively and interesting part of downtown Kyoto, this Ryokan is peaceful at night, yet surrounded by restaurants, bars, shops and close to the wonderful market and to public transport. Staff were welcoming and friendly, and the food was good, but we were very disappointed by our room. We had expected tatami mats,... More

We had an amazing experience at this traditional ryokan. The desk staff spoke English fluently and were helpful and welcoming. The breakfast was beautiful, and we appreciated the daily menu changes. It was wonderful to come back each night to a hot, relaxing bath (bathing facilities were immaculate) and turned down futons. The location was perfect for seeing both downtown... More
