We stayed in rooms on the top floor which are by far the nicest. When we arrived we first viewed the 3 bed apartment and then the rooms on the first floor but they were both a little tired and not so nice. Hard beds but comfy enough, clean, good en-suite bathroom, tv and wi-fi in room. Good, cheap food brought to your room. It is quite a walk from the centre of town and bus station (20-30 steep climb on busy road), good price for Shimla.

Helpful staff. Quiet location. Decent value for money. Room very cold in January and one bar fire at an extra Rs150/night barely helped. Warm bedding though. Lack of restaurant and lounge meant that there was no socialising to be had. In truth I wish I'd paid a bit more for a better hotel nearer the centre of town.

We had a marvelous stay in Shimla at the Hotel Firhill. Nice interiors, good service and some excellent location too. Very reasonably priced menu; Freshly prepared food. The only limitation: distance from the Mall.
