It must be more than 30 years since John Herlihy, a renowned hotel manager in Northern Ireland, purchased the Portaferry Hotel and soon transformed it into the go-to place for food in the Ards Peninsula and much farther afield. So it was with a great deal of curiousity that we called there for lunch recently. The hotel in beautifully situated... More

Had an overnight dinner break for two. No receptionist available to check in or when we called for room service. Lovely clean room with great views over the beautiful lough. We had a lovely four-poster bed with nice antique furniture and found it extremely relaxing. Food was a mixed affair; good quality but rather meagre portions, especially sides. Breakfast was... More

I decided to book dinner ,bed and breakfast for our wedding anniversary as we had always enjoyed our previous visits here. The room was tidy, but starting to look a little "tired",though we did have a lovely view of the lough. The menu was limited, but I had no problem with this as the meal descriptions looked excellent......how wrong could I be!! My... More

We went for lunch mid week. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The lunch menu did not have a side order selection. The dishes all came with set sides and the selection was rather limited. Most dishes either came with chips or mash. I ordered the scampi which came in a paper cone served with chips. Whenever i emptied... More

Visited recently with a degree of trepidation given some of the recent reviews. Years ago this place had a rock solid reputation for food and hospitality. Recent reviews suggest this is more mixed. We visited last about two years ago and couldn't get a table due to a large wedding party. We tried again on a Saturday lunch. We went... More

Stayed one evening as a couple, were booked in by a lovely lady called Sandra. The room was big bright and had a lovely sea, or as was pointed to me a lough view. Did not stay as part of a package but had a evening meal. The food was brilliant and the service from Marco in the dining room,... More

I am late in offering this review but better late than never. In the past we have always enjoyed dining at this hotel and that is why I booked it for Sunday lunch to entertain the family. The whole experience was dissapointing , from the below average standard of the food that was served to the rather surly service off... More

My wife and I arrived to take a culinery Master Class, which included dinner and an overnight bed and breakfast. Having been shown to our room, which was very appealing, we were given our chef's jackets and went back downstairs for coffee and scones. Suitably refreshed we were escorted into the kitchen and introduced to the chefs Andy and Paul.... More

If i had listened to what people say sometimes you could be put off. We went to The Portaferry Hotel Easter Saturday and a wonderful afternoon tea. Our table was beautifully laid waiting for our visit which was previously booked. Coffee and tea offered straight away on arrival. Food brought out beautifully presented. Sandwiches were gorgeous, a selection of chicken... More

I wasn't going to write anything until I saw another review of somebody who had stayed the same night. I booked the 'romance package' which was £160 for one night - they got upgraded to this package presumably on a lower rate. Supposed to b a bottle of sparkling in room on arrival eventually had to ring and ask for... More
